As I opened my sunday sports section of the Times Record, in Ft Smith, AR, on page 2 there is a small article titled Mean Green Mess. It talks about Matress Mac threatening to withdraw his 1 million dollar donation. Also it includes DD secretly pulling out the black jerseys out for the last home game to hack RV off, and then last but not least it desribes the fight between RF and the wr coach, as RF putting the wr coach in a headlock during halftime of a the FAU game. This is a total embarassment that a newspaper over 250 miles from Denton, publishes this in their Sunday paper for everyone to see. I can already hear my co-workers tomorrow blasting me about this. I had already seen this episode on this board, but now to see it in my now hometown newspaper is a total embarassment. As it is we can't get any press, but now we are getting the press nobody wants, the press where the publication is making a big joke about how pitiful our program has become under DD. Thanks DD for all the pub you have gotten us in your last month on the job, now take your staff and get out of town.

If someone on this board had not posted what a so called player's parent told them about a fight in the locker room then the press would know NOTHING about so called fight.

To set the record straight, RF DID NOT have the WR coach in a headlock. Either the so called player parent embellished the story or the person who posted the story embellished. I have talked to numerous people who were in the locker room when this supposedly happened, and IT DIDN'T!!!!!

Some responsiblity for the bad press that UNT and UNT athletics is getting needs to be taken by people on this board who are posting stuff like the above story. Of course, the media reads fan sites. On a slow news day they go looking for dirt and when it comes to UNT football, they know they can always find dirt whether true or not on this board.l

I don't know about the headlock part of it, but there definitely was another altercation. I am glad to see it published, RF is a piece of crap and does not deserve to work in the college football profession. Not only is he an a-hole, he is a terrible example for kids to look up to. This guy gets into fights with fans, sucks the life out of players that are on his shit list, and gets into altercations with fellow coaches - he deserved to be exposed and I am sure happy that he finally has been.

You're now the third player parent who backs up the claim that Coach Flanagan got into a fight with another coach during halftime of the FAU game. Maybe the story doesn't get out without my help, but I think it needed to get out.

I love UNT football, but I'm not going to hide bad news about the program in an effort to protect it. This year's seniors deserved better than to have their final games disrupted by Dickey and Flanagan's juvenile behavior. The university should be investigating this incident and taking a hard look at Flanagan's actions the entire time he was at UNT, not allowing Dickey to deny to the press that the fight took place, as he did in Sunday's Star-Telegram.

This story got out because of parents like yourself who were disgusted with what was happening. If your son's coming back next season and a new coach pulls stunts like these, do you really want people to clam up and protect him? Wouldn't it be better for it to come out so the problem can be dealt with?

umm.... He is saying there was no fight, not supporting your view.

Saying that the fight story is "embellished" acknowledges that some kind of altercation took place.

First, I don't believe you really talked to a player parent. The player parents, former and current that I know don't go around talking about "team things" with non player parents. Thus I used the word embellish because usually when a player parent talks to someone like you, it is absolutely amazing what ends up on this board that a player parent supposedly said which isn't any where near what was said.

Moot point now. The coaches are gone and what some of you once again didn't think about when "providing info and exposing" is the impact it has on the boys on the team.

A lot of people posting on this board talk about being fans and feeling bad for the boys, blah, blah, blah but in the end your actions and your postings don't show that.

The last several weeks have been very difficult on the boys on the North Texas football team especially the Seniors. There is a lot of uncertainty going on in their football lives. You only aggravate it when you "expose" so called happenings.

Show some respect for these boys especially the Seniors. They have provided Saturday entertainment for many of you. They deserve so much better especially from "fans."

I knew when I posted it was going to be twisted around to suit someone's position and you proved me correct. BUT... I know how many of the boys felt when they heard what was being said on this board about situations and coaches. When they needed the support and respect of "fans" they got the usual negative feeding frenzy from this board.

The "boys" deserved to have their names and that of their university on their jersyes for the last home game of their career.

No one on this board took out a full page add costing $5,000 to bring the overall situation to the media, and painted it in a negative light. Darrel Dickey's close, personal friend did. If anyone wants to blame who's fault it is that our dirty laundry got out and around the country it should be pointed to no other person than the head coach himself. He's the one that allowed RF to continue to work here, even after he attacked a fan in the stands last year. Which by the way was also reported in the Dallas Morning News. Who's fault is that?

I greatly appreciate rcade's efforts to try and set the story straight, that it's not the University of North Texas that created this mess, it was Darrell Dickey.

I stand behind what I've said here and on my weblog. I was a newspaper reporter for 10 years. I heard about the fight from several parents and checked it out with other sources.

Thus I used the word embellish because usually when a player parent talks to someone like you, it is absolutely amazing what ends up on this board that a player parent supposedly said which isn't any where near what was said.

That "someone like you" crack is funny. Someone like me is a 1991 UNT alumnus and 18-year UNT fanatic. I dress my kids in UNT gear, joined the Mean Green Club and talk up the program and the Sun Belt all the time.

I respect the fact that you've got a son playing for us. Perhaps you should afford a little respect for fans on GoMeanGreen.Com, many of whom have stuck with the program through Division I-AA purgatory when other schools like UT-Arlington were dumping their team.

How does showing respect for the players mean shutting up about the clown show put on by their fired coaches? I don't follow that reasoning.

I doubt that DD is even admitting to himself that keeping RF on the payroll probably contributed to his firing in a major way. He had plenty of excuses to dump him last year but just couldn't see the writing on the wall. A quality OC this year would of likely gotten us a solid six wins (imo) and saved Dickey's job. Maybe the true DD haters of the world owe RF a word of thanks for a job well done.

Really?

You think it has an impact that a (as your describe it) "twisted" version of a story gets to the press about coaches that won't even be here next year? The football players aren't 8 year olds, I'm sure if they see the story they'll just laugh it off.

I'm wondering whether the total offensive disappearance the last two games has anything to do with Flanagan's anger about being fired causing him to stop putting time into prep. The losses don't mean much in the greater scheme of things, but it would've been nice to send out the Mighty Quinn and the rest of his graduating class with wins over two beatable teams.
