Shirley and Al Goldfield have made a $1.5 million gift commitment to the North Texas athletic department, the largest gift UNT athletics has received, athletic director Rick Villarreal said Wednesday.

The money will be used primarily in the development of a plan for a proposed football stadium adjacent to the Mean Green Athletics Center.

"Shirley and I have been impressed with the improvements that have been made with the athletic programs and facilities at North Texas and felt that it was time for us to get involved with our time and resources," said Al Goldfield, the founder and former chairman and CEO for CellStar Corp., a leader in the wireless communication industry.

The proposed football stadium would be the pinnacle of several facilities projects.

The recently completed Warranch Tennis facility was built from a $1.4 million donation by North Texas alumnus Ronald Warranch. The 47,000-square-foot Mean Green Athletic Center and adjacent football practice facility was built with the assistance of a $1 million gift by Houston businessman Jim McIngvale as well as several six-figure private donations.

Including the Mean Green Village, which hosts facilities for golf, soccer, softball and volleyball, the athletic department has experienced nearly $18 million worth of facilities upgrades since 2003.

this is incredible news. congrats to RV and to the Mean Green Nation for all of the hard work that they have put in towards this. huh, DD gets fired and just a few weeks later we get the largest gift ever in the history of the athletic department.... not saying that it was intentional, just ironic

So, about a year or two ago I mentioned these folks as potential donors...

Boy, that is something. I had a very high opinion of them before this and thought that they were very nice people. This is icing on the cake.

A bio that I found online... interesting stuff.

Alan H. Goldfield is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of CellStar Corporation, a global provider, and the largest wholesaler in the world with logistics, fulfillment, and consumer activation of cellular phones that generated revenues of over 2.3 billion U.S. Dollars in 1999. He founded National Tape and Record Center in 1969 which grew from a local company in Dallas, Texas to become CellStar with international market dominance. Al Goldfield in his key role at CellStar is an industry leader heading up the many innovative and creative services for the numerous wireless communications products the Company has to offer. Mr. Goldfield serves as an officer and director of the company.

As an avid sports supporter and enthusiast, he played professional baseball as pitcher for the Houston Baseball Club from Fall 1961 through Fall 1965 in their minor league system.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was close enough early in life to know firsthand about the Ellis Island experience. His father, the late Herman (Hy) Goldfield, left his native Austria and arrived at Ellis Island in 1920.

Mr. Goldfield, has been married to his wife Shirley since 1972, and they have three sons, Michael, age 26; Brian, age 25; and Richard, age 23. Mr. and Mrs. Goldfield live on a ranch in Texas.

The Goldfield family is also very involved in many charitable and civic activities in the North Texas area.
