MM was right about one (and only one) thing...it was UNT needs to increase the budget if they are going to go anywhere in D1 football...they will never be able to compete with the real programs (read successful programs) with such a low budget and a sub high school stadium.

Ask yourself this...if you had some real talent to play football, would you elect to go play football at UNT...I wouldn't.

Well, I suppose that he can't be wrong about everything regarding North Texas. We'll therefore give him credit for stating the obvious.

MM couldn't have been any more wrong. His own coach at NT, the coaches after him and all in between had ZERO budget compared to what his buddy Darrell had to work with. Yet they never complained to the point of making it a personal vendetta towards the university. Two of which, Fry and Nelson went out and got results against "REAL PROGRAMS". rolleyes.gif

Ah you gotta love the sudden interest from the knee jerk clan.

Welcome Aboard.

don't get me wrong, I have been wanting dickey gone for a LONG time...my point is this...if we are going to run a D1 footballl program we need to pay what we need to to get a good coach, have facilities substantially better than Fouts and get agressive about putting butts in the seats.

Oh, by the way...I think RV is "the man".

DD has been the highest paid coach in conference and I would imagine the highest paid coach to ever coach at NT.

Money isn't the problem.

I don't think money's the problem where the coach is concerned, but UNT needs world-class facilities.

One of the smartest things Mark Cuban did when he took over the Mavs was give them the best player amenities in the NBA. Even visiting teams got lobster dinners after a game. Free agents started coming to Dallas when they wouldn't even consider the team before.

I'll have to disagree with you slightly on this.

What we need is better decision making/evaluating in hiring coaches. The only two times that that has happened since Odus Mitchell left has been when Hayden Fry was hired and Corky Nelson was hired. You could argue that Jerry Moore was a good hire since he was hired away from us.....but TT eventually saw their mistake and fired him.

Our administration has had a DISMAL RECORD of hiring coaches.

We need to hire "up and coming coaches" who are positive, hard working, able to spend a lot of time connecting with alumni and the community, and who are hungry to succeed so that they can move up to the next level.

In the interview, after you've heard about what sort of offense/defense they run (the correct answer to both of those is "exciting" and "fly around the field and hit people"), you need to ask the new applicant what he knows about North Texas and what his plan is to get students and alumni excited about the program again. The correct answer to that question is "go out and speak to any group that will allow me in the door" and "sell, sell, sell".

You put this guy on a three year contract, with one year renewals if there is noticable progress in the third year. You write in a buy out clause so that the University can make money when this coach is hired away from us.

When he's hired away from us, you then go out and hire the next "up and comer" (who you've already identified) and do the same thing all over again. Eventually there will be enough money from alumni/corporate donations to hire a more "name" coach. However I think that hiring name coaches is overrated.

Do a personality profile on the following coaches. Hayden Fry, Corky Nelson and Don Carthel (if you're not going to hire him that is) and if any of the candidates match up with 75 to 80% of the best qualities in the profile.....hire him!

The perk for a Head Coach at NT in a 1-A program is not the salary. It is the chance to show what he can do running the show, ie. job experience. Then he can hope to move up and get the BCS $$. We can't offer BCS coaching $$ but we can offer a 1-A coaching position. Dickey couldn't move up, thus he's moving out! tongue.gif
