Overall salary packages are the biggest in college football's six biggest, richest conferences — the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific-10 and SEC. There, excluding bonuses, USA TODAY found the average coach's salary is $1.4 million. That's more than three times the average of $419,000 in Conference USA, the Mountain West, Western Athletic, Mid-American and Sun Belt.

"I don't think people are going to pay the salaries if they don't have the money," says Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds. "If you've got the revenue, you're going to stay in the marketplace. If you don't, you can't."

When he was winning the Belt and especially when he beat Cincy he probably made very close to that if not more.

That's what I thought.

He is the third highest paid in the SBC ... FAU and FIU are paying more than us. I think FIU the HC is the AD as well. The FIU guy was a Miami hotshot and they paid a premium for him.

If DD were in the WAC, his income would be middle of the road. However, given his overall record, that is more than appropriate. He doesn't have the skins of the Fresno or Boise State.

So he makes "less than average" for a head coach. He makes more than average when comparing the WAC and SBC. He is a "less than average" coach when compared to the rest of the Div1A football coaches.
