Men's Game

I felt like y'all may be underestimating attendance a bit, and I don't put faith in my long term memory any more than my faith that I could lift an 800lb elephant. So I researched attendance for all home games, excluding exhibition, for 2005-2006. I think attendance was a little better than most remembered, though there were some poor turnouts as some have pointed out.

Team/Date/Attendance/Result

Hardin-Simmons vs North Texas (11-18-05) 1428 Win

Chattanooga vs North Texas (12-3-05) 1709 Win

Nicholls State vs North Texas (12-10-05) 1321 Win

Angelo State vs North Texas (12-19-05) 921 Win

Houston vs North Texas (12-23-05) 4102 Loss

UT-Permian Basin vs North Texas (12-28-05) 927 Win

Stephen F. Austin vs North Texas (12-30-05) 1338 Win

Louisiana-Lafayette vs North Texas (1-7-06) 1314 Win

New Orleans vs North Texas (1-7-06) 2108 Loss

Florida Int. vs North Texas (1-12-06) 1871 Win

Denver vs North Texas (1-16-06) 2012 Win

Troy vs North Texas (1-26-06) 4309 Win

South Alabama vs North Texas (1-28-06) 4954 Loss

Middle Tennessee vs North Texas (2-9-06) 2058 Loss

UT-Pan American vs North Texas (2-15-06) 1821 Win

Notice towards the middle of the season how attendance tried to build with the win over Lou.Lafayette, then dropped after the New Orleans loss. The attendance went straight up with wins over Florida Int, Denver, Troy, and peaked with the South Alabama game...followed by a 50% decrease with our loss against S. Alabama.

This just goes to show that folks are ready to support a UNT BB team (1) that wins tough games and (2) wins against good conference or OOC (as shown by the Houston game) foes. I strongly believe that if our team starts winning out, we can easily have 5000-7000 at Super Pit.

Thanks for reminding me. Thse mid-season games before we started to tank the Pit was rockin. I felt like we willed them in a win against Denver. that bad lost against s. alabama hurt attendance.

After we go 14-2 before the jan. 11 game against Lou. La. La. there will be even more buzz then last year.

I'm not real sure how they count everybody because they can't scan my I.D. and I don't buy a ticket, so how do they count me as being there??

I hope that NT can start filling up the Superpit. But if you went to the games last year you know that the crowd for the Houston game was due to Houston fans being in the area for a bowl game. The other two with over 4000 were due to heavy promotions and very generous counts. I am all for generous counts and promotions but less than 2/3 of the lower bowl does equal 5000 fans. My guess is that actual attendence was much closer to 3000.

What would you call heavy promotions? As I recall these games featured free food, a major prize, free tickets for several organizations, honors night for athletes, etc. It was a major and unusual effort on the part of the athletic department to get students involved with a team at the time who was a leader in the Division. Unfortunely it was also the time of a major burn out by the team. If you were there and believe those attendence numbers than you also probably think there were over 25K at the SMU football game.

How did i miss out on this free food? I was at every game and all i got was dollar hotdogs and 50 cent popcorn.

At most there was 100 people from an organization there.

The best prize was a chance to shoot a half court shot for 500 dollars towards books.

Denton is a basketball town! They come to see a good product.

I know that a packed house is possible as I saw it in the early 80s vs Number one ranked DePaul featuring Mark Aquire. The super pit was full and we stood through out the entire game. DePaul won but we kept it close and it was the most exciting game crowd I have ever seen at the pit. Most excitine game there was a victory over Texas while I played in the pep band what fun memories.

The seats are small for big folks. hmmmm I know, go on a diet.
