Number Two - Make a decision on a starting quarterback more than 24 hours before a game. A starting QB needs to take a majority of practice snaps in the week leading up to a game.

Don't have the following plays in the playbook:

1) Run up middle for a loss,

2) Fumble Snap,

3) Throw interception for a TD,

4) Delay of Game

Alright, I know we had five plays in the book, but I don't remember the other one.

no more "We're lucky to even be on the same field at <insert B©S team here>" nonsense. For heavens sake, take the bull by the horns and come up with a plan to win the game.

There is a movie made about Hayden Fry when he was coach at NT - simply called "Coach"- it is a documentary made by the film department from the 70's. Ironically, the tv show based on Fry was simply title "Coach" a couple of decades later. There are some pretty incredible things in that movie, one scene has Hayden Fry on stage with Bob Hope at some sort of rally and he gets Hope to wear a North Texas hat. The other is where Fry makes a single statement to the press that is very Howard Scnellenberger like...

He said, "Someone has to be the #1 team in the country, and I don't know why it can't be North Texas" (or something to that effect). My dream coach would have this attitude and be vocal about it.

I have never met Fry, never saw even one of his games that he coached, nor have I met many people outside of the Mean Green World that even knew that he had coached at NT before going to Iowa.... but I have the deepest respect for the man for that one statement. O'Leary has that attitude at UCF. Mike Price has that attitude at UTEP. TCU has that attitude. Boise has that attitude. We can have that attitude. We do not need to settle for Sun Belt titles. That will be step one in getting us back on track. Our overall goal should be to finish ranked in the top 12 of the BCS polls and play in one of the major bowl games. Period, end of story.

I want a coach that will tell me that - and BELIEVE IT.

That rally was at the SuperPit and Fry was making Bob Hope a member of the Mean Green Club, as it was back then.

Green Grenade can tell you more stories then I but Coach Fry was very charismatic and always upbeat about North Texas chances against anyone!

One story was he asked just after being hired by NT how fundraising had been. When told the most ever raised in a year was around like $50,000, he went out and got over $125,000 his first week from local businesses. We need another Fry-like coach.

And Fry was holding down the A.D. job as well, and doing a darn good job considering the BB, track, and other sports that were also on top, but he and Bill Blakeley were far ahead of their time at NT. I only wish the younger posters could see how well an upbeat, can do, informative Athletic Department worked. Players and fans that believed anything was possible, bonuses to coaches for beating SMU & TCU, being on the news every week and many times the lead story. We were oh so close to being big time, but you have to remember that until then Denton had always thought small. Example-- It was said to me after Fry was gone that it was good ridance as he had run up a big deficit in athletics. I said the Sun. morning after we beat TN we had front page coverage in the New York Times--- how many times has any other dept. got that kind of PR and how much did he think it would have cost to buy it? No response. laugh.gif
