In the midst of this week's events I could not help but remember how we started down this road with Craig Helwig and his KSU connection which brought DD in with only lip service to any kind of a full interview process. It really disturbs me that RV might be leading us down the same path. This hire is important enough to the whole university that one can only hope that Dr. Batille and the BOR hold RV accountable for making the best choice out there and not just one with whom he shares a relationship. Even with the win over SMU the metroplex sees that as a fluke and sill considers us just little ole North Texas. More than anything else we need a coach who is genuinely glad to be at North Texas and shows that positive attitude to the fan base. I can only hope that the choice is one that can reestablish ties with Texas High School coaching that has been severely damaged the past few years. Personally I find that to be of much greater importance than the So. Miss connection. huh.gif

Good post - and this is our next fan lightning rod to divide us all.

Should be an interesting few weeks no matter what your personal opinions are.

Just don't disagree with me - or I will silence you!

It will be a tough hire. The new guy will have to hit the ground quick and wear a lot of hats and make a lot of friends fast: recruits, current players, donors, alums, businesses, media, faculty, etc. It needs to be someone that not only will make a great HC but is charismatic as well. Tough choice.

I personally like the move to let RV have complete control over who he gets in here. I truly think that RV likes it here at North Texas, and that is the most important part. It means if he likes it here enough to stay here, he is going to need to do his job to the best of his ability and I think that RV is very able. I really feel like RV is starting to put the puzzle pieces together for UNT to make serious runs at local and regional talent.

It is also nice to have the accountablility that comes with RV making the choice. It isn't up to persons with absolutely no idea of what NT athletics is all about. Search committees are fine and everything, but if it is full of folks who do not know anything prior to being invited to the search committee about NT athletics, I don't want them having a say in it.

I think RV will want to do a complete 180 from what DD brought to the table.

The new coach must bring in an exciting offense that will put butts in the seats(or nasty bird doo doo covered broken down metal benchs). People want to be entertained at the games. They don't want to see 1/2 yard and a cloud of rubber pellets kind of football. They want to see a dynamic, heart pounding, stand up and slap your momma kind of offense. We need an offense that will allow us to recruit and actually land a top tier QB and a few top notch receivers.

We need a coach that will come into a press conference and make the hair stand up on the back of your neck and gush with Mean Green pride. Remember when Hayden Fry came in and stated that; "Someone has to win the national championship. Why not North Texas?" That's the fire and brimstone we need.

We need someone with Texas ties that can hit the ground running with recruiting. Someone who can go into a recruits living room and sell them on the positives of North Texas as opposed to explaining how much they will have to overcome. Someone who will be able to use the Athletic Center and campus as a positive and bring some state top 100's in.

And if he can shoot laser beams out of his eyes or teleport himself or something cool like that. That would be a plus too.

For me the fact that this university was willing to buy out a $400K contract was a loud statement that we are starting to figure out what it means to make a commitment to major college football.

Now, it goes without saying that most out there in la la land will see it as a cruel happening after ONLY.................................two dismal seasons, as if this was the Solich firing at Nebraska or something. Most who don't go the way of cluelessness like Randy Galloway and have actually done more than read a newspaper heading knows it goes much deeper than that.

Dr. Battialle had it pointed out to her during the MTSU game that this univeristy had already made a multi-million dollar investment to get the crowd that showed up for that game there, but if something wasn't done soon that investment would continue to dwindle. For me this was a huge step in the right direction and I just don't see RV and Dr Battialle mucking it up without it being a well researched, thought out hire. They both know exactly what is at stake here.

El Guapo hope this is not all a sham, and a plethora of canidates will be given consideration.

El Guapo promises he will up his donations to the program if this occurs.

Now, El Guapo is off to rob a stagecoach to pay for this donation.

I look at it from a different perspective: RV may use his connections to convince a SEC coordinator to come to UNT. Sounds like a good deal to me.

(and remember that ties to local recruiting are most important in the assistant coaching ranks, as they are the people actually doing the recruiting.)

I was watching David Letterman the other night and he was talking about President Bush replacing "Rummie" with Dr. Gates, who used to work under the Sr. Bush.

Letterman said, "This is part of the Bush administration's policy of "no crony being left behind".

Are you listening RV? cool.gif

Personaly I'm not going to discount any candidate just because he has a USM connection. And I refuse to believe that just because someone doesnt have a history with RV that they are automatically more qualified.

What if RV did the "Full Search" and still hired someone that had coached at So Miss because they met all of the qualifications, would you just call it a Good Ol Boy hire?

I think you may be the winner. I think it will be very hard for any candidate to come in with a resume better than Nix's (DC at South Carolina). And I am okay with getting a coordinators from a SEC school.

Something to think about: if we try and upgrade at the head coaching position, will the university make the necessary financial commitment to pay assistant coaches? And coach worth his salt will want some good assistants, which means giving assistant coaches more money.

I believe RV has been steadily increasing his budget for this eventuality.
