'Green Team' earns more playing timeBy TROY PHILLIPS

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

DENTON - The North Texas "Green Team" could make a return appearance Saturday at Louisiana-Lafayette.

At the very least, they've earned it.

Against Lousiana Tech on Saturday, UNT benched all 11 of its offensive starters or primary backups in the first half for three series. A poor UNT start resulted in a 21-0 Tech lead.

The Green Team, assembled the previous Monday using players that had rarely or never played -- with the exception of quarterback Matt Phillips -- accounted for 185 yards and 17 points before the starters returned.

UNT romped to a 31-21 third-quarter lead but lost, 34-31, after poor defensive play, turnovers and a scoreless final 23 minutes. However, the Green Team had everyone's attention.

"They got the job done as a group," UNT coach Darrell Dickey said, "and they didn't make any mistakes. They earned the right to play more."

UNT continues to work its Green Team for about 10 minutes per day after regular practice. Unless someone makes UNT's regular offensive rotation, the same 11 will travel to Lafayette and be ready on a moment's notice.

Some of the Green Teamers played like regulars Saturday, particularly fullback Ryan Davenport, receiver Casey Fitzgerald, tailback Deavin Cox and center Kelvin Drake. Cox showed good speed and elusiveness in gaining 69 yards, and Davenport was versatile blocking or receiving out of the backfield.

Weathers questionable

Safety Aaron Weathers' absence Saturday because of a sprained knee left a noticeable void in UNT's defense. Darrell Dickey said he hopes Weathers returns this week.

Elsewhere in the secondary, safety Roy Loren played perhaps his best game despite a cast on his right hand for a third consecutive game. Loren, a junior-college transfer, got a late start to the season because of academic issues. A fierce hitter, he is improving in pass coverage, too.

Next record in sight

Playing through hand and ankle injuries this season, senior wideout Johnny Quinn became UNT's career receiving yards leader, with 2,609 as of Saturday. He needs 11 catches to break UNT's career record of 182.
