UM's Garcia to replace AD Mello at FIU

BY BARRY JACKSON

bjackson@MiamiHerald.com

FIU is expected to announce on Tuesday that it is reassigning athletic director Rick Mello and replacing him with UM senior associate athletic director Pete Garcia, according to two officials close to the situation.

Coincidentally, the move happens the same week UM and FIU are scheduled to meet in football for the first time. The teams will play Saturday at the Orange Bowl.

FIU and UM officials declined to confirm the athletic director change. According to one of the officials, the FIU administration isn't happy with the on-field performance of the athletic program's marquee sports and want the program to ascend to the next level.

Garcia returned to UM last September and oversaw the school's ticket office, ticket sales, Internet and media relations. He assisted UM football coach Larry Coker with recruiting last spring because Coker was short-handed after firing four assistant coaches.

Garcia previously was UM's recruiting coordinator under football coach Butch Davis. When Davis left to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns, he accompanied Davis and took an executive position in football operations.

At UM, Garcia was widely considered the likely successor to athletic director Paul Dee. Garcia still could emerge as UM's next athletic director, but not likely in the foreseeable future. Dee is under contract through 2010 and has said he intends to remain in the job.

One of Garcia's biggest decisions will be determining the future of coach Don Strock, who has guided the team to a 15-35 record in five years, including 0-6 this season.

The basketball team last season was 8-20 under Sergio Rouco, who's entering his third season.

Mello is expected to be reassigned to another position in the administration.

I'm sure RV wants to receive an email about a school replacing their AD, and I am also sure that Mello was fired over the NT game. dry.gif

This obviously was in the works to have a replacement ready to go.

FIU had the talent to be more succesful this year in football and basketball has been simply dreadful. The football schedule killed any chance football had to do well this year. With football AND basketball struggling the finger gets pointed at the AD.

If you look at FIU's last few football games, they've actually performed alot better than our team has. They played MTSU close and they also fought a close fight with Maryland. Yeah, they don't have a single W, but they look like they're improving and just need consistency to win.

In other words- our coaches need to get rolling. What little edge UNT held during the 2001-2004 seasons is already lost.

They have really been unlucky... five of their losses havae been by 14 points ...TOTAL...

Actually he might be quite intersted, he does have tendancies to apply for other AD jobs at struggling universtiy's

Shhhh, don't let the 10 people who haven't figured this out yet know....

I'll tell you what...these last few days following the FIU game have me pretty concerned over what's going on in our Athletic Program. Between the Fake Lonnie Finch/Kenny Evans-flyonthewall/RV's close pal brawl for $2k and this thread here....seems that there is a pretty big struggle for power in the AD right now....it seems obvious that these posters are pretty close to the situation--no matter how ridiculous their posts.

...but what bothers me is that none of the people fighting for power seem to think very highly of UNT. The coaching staff and RV all have seemed to have applied for new jobs over the last few years---though that could all be internet rumor??

Is it time for a house cleaning?

I definitely see your point. But if you've ever spoken to RV in person, you know that he literally oozes green and can't be more proud of the university. Even if RV is completely happy here at North Texas (and I doubt he is, if any of the rumors of power struggles between him and the BOR are true), then I still can't really blame him for throwing his name around for other jobs.

In your job, even if you're happy, do you take your resume off the market? You're always on the look-out for a better opportunity. In this, I can't even fault DD. I think the major difference between the two is that DD has never had much positive to say about the university. It's like he feels that he's stuck here and this is one of the last places on earth he'd like to be.

RV on the other hand, at least goes out there and promotes the university. It may not be his dream job, but he definitely gives 100% effort. He doesn't have the emotional ties to the program that we alumni have. I don't necessarily think that the AD has to be an alumni who adores the university behind some thick green glasses. I just want someone who can oversee an athletic department, raise funds, and promote the university while at least acting like he/she is happy to be here.

Comparing DD and RV in the arena of public personas is hardly a fair fight! smile.gif You're right, though. DD comes off as hating it here, while RV is the exact opposite. If I had to choose, I know who I'd keep and who I'd clean out. I just hope that our administrators make an unbiased decision for the best of the university. Dr. Bataille (I know there are others, but she's the newest and offers the freshest approach I've heard in a while) has a tough situation to navigate right out of the gate.

since 2k is nothing compared to the money I have donated to this program, I will gladly pledge it to the mean green club to find out who "the fake lonnie finch is".

And by the way r.v. r.v. r.v. r.v. There is no struggle in the A.D.s' office right now. He will and can do what needs to be done.
