UNT women's basketball player out for year

By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle

DENTON – Mamie James, one of the women's basketball team's top recruits, is out for the season with a back problem that could end her career.

Coach Tina Slinker said James has a congenital back problem that was recently discovered after the junior experienced back pain in practice.

James averaged 14 points and five rebounds for Tyler Junior College last season, when she was named an honorable mention NJCAA All-America.

James was expected to provide an additional scoring threat at small forward and soften the blow the Mean Green will experience after losing three senior starters who helped lead the team to the Sun Belt Conference West Division title and a 19-9 record last season.

James will remain with the team, even though she will not play this season.
