Football is not the only sport they look at.

Agree, El Paso Eagle....

And start with about 3 million Texas Baptist for beginners of which most of their churches help support Baylor (or at least they did in greater numbers B4 the Baptist started bickering among each other about who was Moderate and who was Conservative and who would be in charge of all their various Baptist agencies in Texas).

Baylor had the kind of success TCU is "presently" experiencing during much of the 1970's well into the 1980's while TCU was basically playing the role that Baylor is at this point in time most of that era when the Bears were successful. In fact, TCU may have played that role much longer than Baylor is in the Big 12 now.

From past observation, conferences as a rule don't drop schools from their membership, but sometimes schools drop conferences for other options. TCU will be in its present conference situation for a long, long time to come and will evenually have a "down cycle" (again) with their football program. Now when the Big East did their thing with Temple U, that was for a rare situation and scenario best I recall.

TCU's Coach Patterson (if he doesn't talk himself out of a better job) will eventually get a better job than TCU. Francione left $1 million a year contract in Frogland on the table to go to a truly big time program, ie, Alabama. After all, don't all NCAA D1-A employees want something better than what they have now, save the most elite schools in NCAA D1-A such as USC, UT, Notre Dame, etc, etc, etc? Even our former Coach Fry was quoted to saying he wanted to play in front of larger crowds than SMU would ever have produced and NT with its forever 15K per home game crowds & that seemedly no matter how large our constituency has grown since Fry left Denton now close to a quarter century ago). blink.gif

All the non-Big 12/ex Texas SWC schools are now playing the role that NORTH TEXAS did when we were upstarts trying to gain membership in the Southwest Conference back in the mid-1970's. I am sure most of that group by now must now know how we felt when we had good teams and felt a better league would suffice for the quality we had in both football and our quality of basketball back then (and that even compared to most SWC schools quality of basketball during that era).

We never made the national arena in basketball success in any era at UNT. In fact, has our 18 year UNT careeer Lady's Mean Green coach ever gotten past any NCAA 1'st round with all thise years under her belt in Denton? Well, the answer is no she has not, but at today's UNT all you have to apparently do is merely be a good ol' boy bull-shipper, a good tax paying citizen and you get one of those extended contracts from ECU; you now, Extended Contract University. OK, I'll stop on that for now, but for you newbies on GMG.com, just do a little checking around with how our school now seems to operate its athletics business and then go hide all your razor blades in your bathroom.. rolleyes.gifsmile.gif

Many of the non Big 12/ex Texas SWC schools know we would have been more than competitive versus their schools (some of the time) but it was some of that group back in the day who would still not schedule NTSU. The shoe (once again) now seems to be on the other foot with those schools as they are the ones on the outside looking in.

The Good Ol' Baylor Line (their school song's title) will be in the Big 12 as long as they want to be and as long as the Big 12 stays in tact, IMHO. Now if the Big 12 one day pulls the SWC implosion bit and starts playing musical chairs and lining up new affiliations for themselves forming a new league with a different name (not likely in our lifetimes), but if that were to happen again down here in the Southwest, then all bets are off with (probably) most any of the Texas private schools that used to be in the SWC ever in the future being a part of any conference that Texas and Texas A & M are members of.

Anyone know if their is a contract that the BIG 12 has to abide by to keep Baylor. I mean they are both private schools, and it would make sense for the Big 12 to be in the DFW area....weird

any thoughts

GO MEAN GREEN BEAT MTSU

Grades have alot to do with it. You need a school like Baylor to boost the conferences overall numbers. In addition Baylor has won several national championships in the past few years, womens basketball, I believe they've also won tennis recently; add to that they have a perennial powerhouse track program. The Big 12 would never get rid of Baylor. Football is but a piece of the puzzle.

The 'Good ole Baylor line' is as follows. 'Hey Big Twelve, send us our cut and we will be you whipping boys forever.'

Realistically, teams almost never get booted from a conference if they are at least trying to be competitive. And Baylor is (or has been) in every sport except football.

I can only think of two cases in the last fifteen years or so of teams being booted from conferences. Temple was just pushed out of the Big East after they actually cut back on their meager football budgets. The other was Pan American which got booted from the Sunbelt after trying to use NCAA probation to cut their basketball budget for a few years.
