UNT experience could pay against Akron defense

By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle

DENTON – UNT will face a 3-3 stack defense for the second straight week in its game against Akron on Saturday, which could help the Mean Green get its offense on course, coach Darrell Dickey said Wednesday.

UNT faced the defense for the first time this season in a 28-3 loss to Tulsa last week, when the Mean Green finished with 89 yards of total offense. The performance dropped UNT to 118 of out of 119 teams in Division I-A with an average of 165.7 yards of total offense a game.

"It will help us because you get a better feel for blocking assignments," Dickey said. "It's a different style of defense. We will be a little better off knowing who to block and the types of stunts people like to run against our offense."

Correct me if I am wrong but is this the responsiblity of the OC, Ramon "I Can Count All My Offense Plays On My Digits" Flannigan??

I thought, correct me if I am wrong, part of the OC's responsibility was to have contingency plans for various Defenses and how to play to their weakness.

I am just worried:

1. Was the 3-3 just a surprise or is it a better defense for trying to run between the tackles?

2. Evidently no adjustments were made during the Tulsa game....or in most other games.

3. Is Darrel "Keep 8 In The Box" Dickey's new slogan, "If it is broke.....DON"T fix it?"

4. How much attention does RF pay to the game and does he know how to adjust?

S.E's Infamous battle cry, "YOU ARE BEING OUT COACHED" rings out louder every day.

As frustrated as I am about the offensive scheme and its calculated failures against other mid-major programs......I would like to see DD/RF try something NEW----kinda like throwing 60%-70% of the time, kinda like running the tripple option, kinda like running 50% trick plays, kinda like quick kicking on first down....anything but what these two grown EX-collegent-QB's are doing to us now.

UNT is playing against a "Defensive Buzz-Saw" in Akron Saturday.

1. Akron held two BCS schools (Penn State & NCSU) to less than 90 yards rushing.....what do you think will happen to #117 in the country offensively??

2. I just hope that DD can adjust and come up with a game plan similar to SMU. Then we may have a chance.

We know UNT has talented FB players ....but.....they are not being used to their full potential.....you can have all-american talent but underutilization of that talent is egregious.

Abe Lincoln fired a lot of "Yankee" generals before he found one who could win. Perhaps the UNT BOR can look at this 145-year old Management Technique.
