Homecoming activities:  TU's annual homecoming pep rally and bonfire is set for Thursday night. The free event begins at 8 p.m. on campus, followed by a 9 p.m. bonfire and fireworks display.

Shaking head!

Just so you know our Risk Management is already talking about bowing down to the county fire marshall..........again and ready to cancel our bonfire due to the drought and burn ban. I'm personal friends with the Risk Management director at Tarleton State and spoke to him in Granbury on the morning of the 4th of July this summer. He said Tarleton has never canceled their bonfire due to drought or to an Erath county burn ban, and they have their bonfire in the middle of a pasture? Seems they have their volunteer department show up with three brush trucks just in case to keep an eye on it for a time until it burns down. What a novel concept?

If Tarleton and Tulsa have theirs again this season there is zero reason why NT can't have its own bonfire. Unlike most school's, our bonfire is bounded by a pond on one side and a sea of pavement on the other. And to top it off we have a PAID, city fire department with plenty of resources that the university pay's for at our disposal to watch over a stack of pallets that burns extremely quick. Surely we can ask for a return on our investment for an hour?

DO NOT CANCEL HOMECOMING BONFIRE!

NT's Director of Risk Management needs to quit being a wuss and FIND A WAY around any burn bans.

Didn't someone point out that, since the bonfire is on state property, it is excluded from any local burn bans? Possibly Soundman?

Might be a good time for Talons to put up or shut up. Make something happen.

Is that Talons bashing? Not sure if that's allowed anymore... dry.gif

I have never understood exactly why the Denton FD hates anyone at UNT who has anything to do with fire protection.

"Junior college transfer Woody Wilson, who helped UNT defeat SMU 24-6 last weekend, has been named the starter by coach Darrell Dickey.

"You have to keep him in the pocket and try to contain him," TU defensive coordinator Keith Patterson said. "On pass plays, he'll pull it down and run with it.

"The key to playing an athletic quarterback like that is you have to swarm to the football."

Charles Davis, a TU defensive back, has quarterbacked the scout team this week.

"The speed of (the scout team) has been incredible," Patterson said. "(Davis) has done an outstanding job this week."

Maybe DD didn't want to initially name Woody starter so SMUt and Tulsa would have to prep for Phillips style of play instead? Nah.

Which brings the question, are coaches required to announce a starter in public? I know the fans want to know, but it would be more difficult for the opponent to prepare not knowing. Although from the previous game stat sheet or recap you could probably tell who should play, based on just stats and points.
