Football: Just hand offense over to Wilson

12:02 AM CDT on Sunday, September 10, 2006

Russ Goodall North Texas quarterback Matt Phillips might as well hand over the keys to the UNT offense to Woody Wilson.

While UNT head coach Darrell Dickey was ready to get home, relax and enjoy a bunch of granola bars after Saturday’s victory over SMU, he was not ready to anoint the junior transfer from Fayetteville, Ark., the starter.

However Wilson’s play against the Mustangs should have cemented it.

Wilson led the Mean Green to a 24-6 upset win over SMU to send nearly all of the 25,231 fans celebrating into the Denton night.

“Woody brings us something that will help us offensively, in that when he is in the game the defense has to worry a little bit about getting attacked on the perimeter,” Dickey said.

After relieving an ineffective Phillips early in the second quarter, Wilson guided the Mean Green on two extended scoring drives that helped seal the Mustangs’ fate.

While the Mean Green grabbed a 7-0 lead with Phillips playing with the first team, the sophomore quarterback didn’t do anything to help the team get points.

The first seven points were produced by the special teams unit, but the next 17 points came directly because of the play of Wilson.

And while he didn’t start against SMU, Wilson showed that he definitely deserved to.

Coming on the heels of leading the Mean Green to their only score against No. 2 Texas last Saturday in the season opener, Wilson again produced the only offensive points in last night’s win over the Ponies.

Wilson scored the first offensive touchdown of the game when a pass play broke down and he scrambled left into wide open field and trotted into the end zone for a 33-yard score to help push the UNT lead to 14-6.

He followed that up by leading a drive that produced a field goal and another that got Jamario Thomas in the end zone for the first time in 14 games -- against Idaho on Nov. 13, 2004.

SMU was keying on Thomas early, not scared of Phillips’ ability to scramble for positive yards.

Thomas carried the ball seven times for nine yards in the first two quarters of the game, as UNT led 7-0 after 30 minutes.

With Wilson, who rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries, at the helm of the offense in the second half, Thomas was able to break free.

The former NCAA rushing champion carved up the SMU defense with his legs, to the tune of 91 yards on 18 carries -- ending the night with 100 yards.

“Wilson is a double threat -- he can throw the ball and he can run the ball,” Thomas said. “You have to watch out for both of those [aspects of his game].”

When he had time behind a very below-average offensive line, Wilson was able to find open receivers -- completing 8 of 10 passes for 103 yards.

While it seemed like a no-brainer that Wilson would start against SMU -- after his performance against Texas, Dickey and the UNT coaching staff saw something nobody else seemed to see.

However, it took almost a half of football for the staff to see something most in attendance wanted to see from the opening kickoff -- No. 8 making plays for the Mean Green offense.

So, while SMU is still searching for a quarterback after the ho-hum play of both Justin Willis (15-of-19 passing for 112 yards with a touchdown and an interception) and Corey Slater (5-of-10 passing for 47 yards), Mean Green fans should feel a lot better about the remainder of their season.

Why? The Wilson era began Saturday night at Fouts Field.

And after Dickey gets some rest and digests his granola, he should feel the same way.
