4.  I do think UNT's offensive line should be able to handle the rush by SMU's defensive line.  I didn't think they (SMU's d-line) were very good.

Strange, thier Dline is considered the strength of the team.

The didn't blitz much at all, any pressure they created, they made with those four down linemen.

Be glad you are NT fan and not a Colorado or University of New Mexico Fan. They are about to have a heart attack in Albuquerque after losing to Portland State 17-6. Losing to Division ll teams is a real bad thing.  I will take the loss to Texas and yes I wish it would have been closer but stop and think the money that goes into their program and the money that goes into ours. I gave UNT 6k in the last two years to the athletic program and half to the general fund but none to be used in the music department.  They tried to talk me out of sending money to the athletic program and I responed that I was the giving money to the university because of the athletic program at UNT. I am very proud of UNT win or lose if I wanted to be a fair weather fan I would be cowboy fan.  Go Mean Green and kick SMU out of Fouts field.  This will be the first year in six years I will not make a game.  My daugher is costing me to much attending UNT with out of state tuition. She hated Denton when she first arrived but now wants to stay in Denton when she finishes school. She loves UNT and Denton.  Anyone have any job openings for  a UNT graduate?  I have read the posts for a long time and decided to give an outsiders view.  One day I will be retire and move back to Denton and see you all on game day win or lose.

That's what I love hearing. We'll be glad to have you back in Denton, my friend.

No, they didn't blitz much at all, and they only got to the QB really once...but that was with a blitz.

But I was watching the SMU D-line from two perspectives. One as a Tech fan, I watched how they got pressure on the QB, which they didn't. But as a UNT fan, I watched Tech's running game against them thinking about how UNT will do, because Dickey ball is run Jamario 90% of the time, and PA pass the other 10%.

Tech's O-line isn't really designed for old-fashioned rushing up the gut blocking...yet the Tech RB, Shannon Woods, was flying past the SMU d-line without them even knowing he was there.

As a rushing defense, I was not impressed with their D-line at all (or Tech's O-line is much better than I'm giving them credit for).

Anyone else concerned by this? The Development Department shouldn't be talking anyone out of donating money to whoever they want to donate money to. It's like a Ford car salesman telling a customer to go to Toyota instead.

Thank you for keeping the course and welcome to the board.

There was nothing in the Texas game that makes me feel good about this coming week. In fact, the mere fact that DD can't even put a name to the starting QB for this week makes me a little nervous. I think we will beat SMU, but then again, I thought for sure we could get at least 100 yards of offense, and we didn't do that so who knows.

I think that if you changed your analogy a little you'd have it nailed. Have the customer steered toward buying a Volvo (or vice versa) since both are owned by Ford.

I think that the problem might be that the person who handled the giift might not get credit for the portion that goes to the Athletics Department. The only person that I know of in the OOD that would be a square shooter is Chuck Vinson. He wouldn't try to talk you into changing and would be proud that the money is going to athletics.

Too bad Chuck is no longer with the Office of Development.

I am not sure that we can judge how good we are by SMU maybe how bad.

In the Jeff Sagarin NCAA football ratings UNT is ranked 119 and SMU is 117. I would rather measure against a mid-major like Tulsa ranked 68.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL thru results of  SEPTEMBER 3 SUNDAY

And KingDL1, aren't there just 119 schools in NCAA D1-A now? rolleyes.gif

And the beat goes on....

Yeah there sure is 119, worse yet is that ranking is from the Jeff Sagarin NCAA football ratings in which he has 20 D1AA teams a head of UNT.

KingDL1, thanks for the research in your above post.

Unfortunately, there would probably be a handful of those 20 NCAA D1-AA schools ahead of UNT in this poll who would provide a better matchup with the CUSA rep in the 2006 NO's Bowl. I just don't know how low we have to go till someone says enough. sad.gif

You have got to be kidding me.  We have the worst loss in the nation today.  I don't know what you are looking for but that is pathetic.  You have to set your goals higher than where it is right now.  We got beat in every aspect of the game, period.  There is nothing to hold your head high about.  We will lose to SMU by 21.

I feel bad typing this because I don't like name calling especially when I don't know the person, but either you're an idiot or you don't know the landscape of college football.

Of course Texas beat NT in every aspect of the game, they are the defending national champs. They will beat most teams in every aspect of the game this season. And don't give me no Vince Young. If that defense isn't the best in the country it's right there. Jamaal Charles and Selvin Young make up the best backfield this side of Cal and their WRs are the best this side of USC.

I have talked to plenty of experts that know more about college football than I'll ever forget, they are positive this team is still great w/o VY.

That 9 play 80 yd drive IS something to hold your head high about. J-Mo looked like the back of 2 years ago and Woody moved around the pocket and completed some nice passes.

We as NT fans/alums have to be realistic. Our bar is set high, it's just a different bar than the one UT has. It might sound crazy, but I have faith in this years team.

Bring on SMU, Go Mean Green!!

SouthBendGreen, beggin' your pardon but I just have to agree to disagree with you this time around. How could anyone say that our bar is set high with Mean Green football when KingDL1's above post shows a poll that has 20 NCAA D1-AA schools ranked above UNT?

I know some of our fans will get just plain giddy with what I feel will be an expected home field win over "1 winning season in 2 decades" SMU this Saturday night, but even with such a win over the lowly Mustangs this win should never be considered as one of our schools top 10 wins because we are playing a school who has had their own bar set pretty darn low the last 2 plus decades, too. Again, I defer to an SMU football media guide for those who need a reminder of that fact.

AND...............if not for the fact that 4-5 SMU alums pooled their monies to build SMU a new football stadium, might SMU's bar even be lower than it has been of late? If not for a new stadium, would SMU have done like Rice and Tulane the last 2 years entertaining the idea of dropping Mustang football?

I realize after a 2-win season last year in Mean Green Country that any win is a plus for DD's program, but do keep our expected win over SMU in perspective, folks, because we are not playing the SMU that our father's and grandfather's used to read about. And that another reason SMU will probably bring the same number of fans they did for our 1990 game which was abysmal as I look at the DVD of this game as the cameras pan the crowd.

But there is some good news to report: Parker County had a helluva' bunch of rain the last 48 hours and my pond (about 50 feet from my spacious wooden deck) is all but over-flowing! smile.gif

Plumm,

Keep in mind that the ratings for D1AA where it shows 20 above UNT are from Jeff Sagarin. I trust that like a I trust a trailer house in a tornado.

I can tell you this. My boss is an SMU guy, and after watching UNT vs. UT he is more worred than he was before about his ponys. He, as well as myself, thought the D look fine considering who we were playing.

Truth be told it is impossible to say how well we will do when you use UT as a guage.
