DENTON, Tex. (8/31/06) – In dramatic fashion senior Kristen Campbell scored the game-winning goal to lift the North Texas (2-0) women’s soccer team past Houston 2-1 in overtime from the North Texas soccer field.

Campbell took a feed from Kelli Lunsford 91 seconds into the extra frame and fired a laser past Houston (2-1) goalkeeper Shelby Scott from 15 yards out. Campbell’s heroics extend the North Texas unbeaten streak at home to 15 games.

North Texas had to rally to remain perfect on the year in a physical match from the onset. Houston scored first in the 37th minute as Jordan Godbolt knocked a header in off a corner kick from Sophia Mundy.

The Cougars carried a 1-0 lead into the second half until the Mean Green began to swing the momentum.

True freshman Kendall Juett knotted the game up at 1-1 when she sliced through the Houston defense and scored from the top of the box in the 68th minute of play.

Both teams had their chances in the final 22 minutes of play but could not score. The overtime frame brought North Texas into the Cougar end of the field quickly, culminating in the Campbell game-winning goal.

The Mean Green outshot the Cougars 17-13 and goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made three saves on the night to pick up the win.

North Texas is 2-0 to start the season for the sixth time in school history.

North Texas returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. with a match against metroplex rival SMU.

How was attendance?

Not posted yet, but I'd venture to say we had 300 easy. Pretty good. But this is an exciting team that has not yet played their best soccer. Lundsford, Hutyra, Hurst and Campbell are not yet 100% from nagging minor injury issues. Juett is the real deal, exciting ball skills and fast. Her goal last night was highlight reel! Campbell's shot was money. Defense is shaping up, Houston was fast and rough, we played them head up and won, coming from behind. We need to get the word out to more folks. Concessions are upgraded, and what college kid would not want nachos and hot dogs instead of dorm food on Friday nite or Sunday afternoon? C'mon tongue.gif ... Looked to me like we are getting a few more student athletes than last year, maybe due to the closer proximity of the dorm? Wish we could get more of the soccer alum too. Good stuff!

I believe they got the assist wrong here, believe Juett crossed to Hurst who pushed it back to Campbell for the strike. I'll check the official stats when they are posted. wink.gif

Agreed.  Houston was picked to win CUSA

However, thought SMU was a bit more impressive than Houston. Will be a good Conference race there. Encouraged by our play against two real good teams. I did not think our offensive game was as sharp against SMU as was against Houston. Had we gotten that sharper effort, might could have won the SMU game.

Was not able to make the SMU game but came away very impressed with the second half effort of the Houston game. Seems like the girls have gotten better with each game they have played from the OU scrimmage till now. They flat turned Cougar high Green in the second half and OT.

Going to be a tough weekend in Lincoln and hopefully yall can put a beat down on the Corn and Women of Troy. Best of luck.
