I said last spring that I thought JQ would get his chance for sure. You cannot ignore what he's done while operating within such a run first offense as ours. I remember, too often I suppose, that when thinking back how much dead set we are to run the ball in this system was that of the Nichols State game in '02 in which we had the perfect opportunity to allow Smith to get his feet wet against a much inferior team and really light someone up, yet we only threw the ball 7 times. Our defense dominated them to the point it was rediculous. I only remembered NSU crossing the 50 one time all night. The sad part was, a historically weak 1-AA program like NSU knew we were going to run all night and simply gave up on the idea of pass protection at times. At one point GMoney pointed out to me during a play that NSU was in a 10 man front with one guy back as free safety and we refused to take advantage of it. It looked as if they were in punt-return formation.

Per MGS:

.....Smith, in his first career start,  played an error-free game with no interceptions.  North Texas relied on its rushing attack most of the game and Smith passed just seven times, completing three of those attempts for 43 yards.

So considering that JQ could end up being our all time reciever say's a lot about his accomplishments and abilities.

the one from the fight in practice today that required surgery

Last I heard, he had hurt his hand, and that he would go see a doctor. I was not aware of any surgery. Do you know something we don't?

Did you hear that a "fight" was involved somehow?

I have no idea how I missed the word "fight" in there. I didn't know that, either.

Johnny had surgery this morning. 2 screws in his 3rd metacarpus of his left hand. Currently in a cast so the hand can not be moved. He will play somehow against UT.

Well hopefully the coaching staff has learne something about serious injuries on their star players: it was foolish to see if Cobbs could play one handed (and then with one knee), it was foolish to not shut Jamario down last year to rest his hammy, and it will be foolish to to try and play a WR who has a cast on one hand.

If his hand has a cast, red shirt him; and bring him back for 2007. But don't waste his senior year by letting him try to play wide receiver with a cast. That would be bad for the team, and bad for any draft potential.

If he doesn't play, he could receive a medical redshirt.

Regardless, a good WR is likely to be drafted by the NFL. Not too many kickers get picked in the draft.

Hope The Mighty Quinn can have a great year (over come his injury) and become an NFL WR.
