Football: SMU’s Willis to undergo surgery to remove wart

08:33 AM CDT on Saturday, August 19, 2006

UNIVERSITY PARK — SMU starting quarterback Justin Willis, a former Ryan standout, needs surgery to remove a plantar wart on his left foot. Coach Phil Bennett said the redshirt freshman is scheduled to have the procedure Thursday.

The wart affects Willis’ balance and speed, leading to inconsistency. Bennett said the procedure should not affect Willis’ status as starter for the Mustangs’ opener at Texas Tech on Sept. 2.

Willis led Ryan to its fourth straight Class 4A state championship game in 2003 and a 12-2 season in 5A in 2004. He was a combined 26-4 as a starter for the Raiders and redshirted for the Mustangs last season.
