Mean Green Fall To Sooners 3-2 In Preseason Game

DENTON, Tex. (8/18/06) – In a back and forth match the North Texas women’s soccer team fell to Oklahoma 3-2 in a preseason game from the North Texas Soccer Stadium at the Mean Green Village.

North Texas fell behind early 2-0 to Oklahoma, as the Sooners scored twice in the first 24 minutes of the game. Kady Kelly made it 1-0 Oklahoma with a goal from 10 yards out on the left side. Shana All gave the Sooners a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute off a centering feed from Kelly in the box.

The Mean Green answered five minutes later with a goal from sophomore Veronica Ayala on a scramble in the box. Ayala put away the rebound shot after Dani Slavonic’s initial header was stopped. Oklahoma held a 2-1 lead into the break, but North Texas immediately knotted the game up 95 seconds into the second half. Senior Kristen Campbell took an Oklahoma turnover and buried a shot into the right side of the net from 10 yards out to even the game up at 2-2.

Oklahoma retook the lead for good in the 51st minute when All tallied her second goal of the night on a deflection off a pass from Daphne Fitzpatrick.

North Texas outshot the Sooners in the second half 6-5, but could not get the game tying goal. Junior goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made four saves on the night for the Mean Green.

North Texas plays their final exhibition game tomorrow night, against the Alumni at 7 p.m. from the North Texas Soccer Stadium.

Was a pretty good game. UNT looked a little ragged, but in spite of the fact Hutyra did not play, we kept the game close. One could argue that it was even at best. Still, I think OU was a bit more organized and had a very good counterattack, and finished their chances. There was a great crowd on hand!

The Alumni game was a disappointment, but that Alumni team was no slouch with Marin and Pena, they looked in top form! Offense was much better although UNT missed on 4 breakaway 1 v 1 chances, but still more work to do on the defensive end.
