Gittens graduated from Irving Mac in 2002, the Cardinals went 7 and 4 that year, made the playoffs and lost to eventual 5A DivII state champ Southlake Carroll in the first round...after that he joined the Golden Norsemen of NEO.

Seems as though he was at a BYU summer camp in June of 2002...here was the scouting report by www.cougarblueii.com

Freddie Gittens: Again speed, speed, speed. He is more of a defensive player than an offensive one, and plays at the line of scrimmage jamming the receivers off the line. He reminded me of a taller Omar Morgan who was masterful at jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Gittens has more of a defensive mentality than Adam Dawkins does, being able to cover and adjust to the offensive players during the plays. Add to that his great instincts and field awareness to help out on coverage, and excellent speed to pursue other wide receivers. From a defensive standpoint here is what I saw on Freddie Gittens....

First, Gittens has speed to cover man to man as no one was able to get separation.

Second, he has good DB technique and can jam up receivers at the line of scrimmage. A few even fell to the turf and never even made it out.

Third, Freddie understands defense. He made good reads on the offense and played the zone and passing lanes very well and has closing speed to help out with coverage.

From the first day's testing to seeing Adam Dawkins and Freddie Gittens play in a scrimmage was very encouraging. They both had football skills to go along with their natural abilities. Albeit they both were better on different sides of the ball.
