Mavericks could start training camp at UNT

08:59 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 16, 2006

By DAVID MOORE / The Dallas Morning News

The Cowboys train in Oxnard, Calif.

The Rangers knock off the rust in Surprise, Ariz.

The Mavericks have their sights set on Denton.

Coach Avery Johnson met with University of North Texas officials Monday and said the club hopes to conduct the first five days of training camp at the university. The rest would be at American Airlines Center as it has in the past.

"We are in preliminary talks, and it's really going well," Johnson said. "There is a high probability that we will go there if we can work out some kinks."

Camp opens in October.

Awesome news now please Faculty members don't screw this up. I know this does not help your academic career, but it is great pub for the university.  :D

If it's going to happen, we may know something as early as Monday afternoon.

Everything that gains the attention of the basketball world is good for North Texas.

North Texas having facilities suitable for an NBA team may make a positive impression on the recruits that participate in the Nike Tournament held at the university each summer.

If only the courts at the new rec center could also be utilized for the Nike Tournament. The talent sunbathing by the pools would certainly make an impression.

When I worked at Texas A$M's Galveston campus of the Oceanology dept heading financial and admin services the Houston professional basketball team rented our gym for their preseason practice.

It provided the opportunity for autographs, but not meeting or visisting with the players. Hopefully that opportunity will exist in Denton if the Mavs work out there.
