That's a stretch.

Forget the fact that aTm was voted #1 in 10 out of 13 polls... huh.gif

And a comment from another board: laugh.gif

"In late breaking news, from a poll conducted among all ESPN commentators, USC has been declared NC for all years between 1931 and 2006, inclusive, an incredible 76-peat. Asked whether they expected USC to reign again in 2007, ESPN spokesman Merrill Hoge was quoted as saying, "It don't make a shit."

The logic for year 2006 used is that after the game ended, Matt Leinart noted that USC was still the better team, despite the inconvenience posed by the scoreboard. ESPN commentators, apparently agreeing with that logic, are quoted as saying, "Matt said it, we believe it, that settles it".

Bumper stickers can be ordered from ESPN on-line.

Notre Dame has lodged a protest, complaining that they are due at least half of those NC's by virtue of the fact that they once had a coach by the name of Knute "I'd like to buy a vowel" Rockne, but the ESPN spokesman said only, "i've got your four horsemen", then declined further comment, pointing to his bumper sticker and gaving the press corp the V for victory sign.

in theoretically unrelated news, ESPN noted that they had dominated the ratings sweeps in southern california for the first time since pro football left the area. ESPN spokeswoman Ima Hoare commented that the strange circumstance was just an odd coincidence."

By it's own definition of the rules, there is no such thing as a National Championship in Division 1 football. There is a BCS Championship, which people are certainly free to pretend is a National Championship, but the title game is exclusive to only BCS conference members.

It's like saying that the Super Bowl would still determine the NFL champions if only the AFC teams were allowed to participate in the game each year.

greatness!  laugh.gif

reminds me of that campaign an LSU and UT fan had to put a billboard up in SoCal of the "one-peat"... anyone know if that ever came to fruition?

Yes, it did. wink.gif

On 2/23/06, it went up a couple blocks from the USC campus. The onepeat guys also fabricated a billboard truck to drive around the ESPN complex in Bristol.

You're right, and there's no argument--since BCS wasn't brought up--but the fact is that the nation has informally and generally regarded poll winners as the National Champions of D1 for over a century.

It's also generally accepted that the majority poll-winners claimed the NC of that year, but not in this case. laugh.gif Using USC's accounting methods, the Horns have 9 NC's, and aTm has 2.

Here were the results of the 1939 polls:

1939

Cornell:: Billingsley, Litkenhous

Southern California: Dickinson

Texas A& M: AP, Boand, DeVold, Dunkel, Football Research, Helms, Houlgate, National Championship Foundation, Poling, Williamson

That's why its commonly called the MNC or Mythical National Championship.
