The real tragedy here is that the Field Judge, whose responsibility is the goal line and sideline, attempts to make the Back Judge's call (who was in excellent position). Only possible explanation is the UT sideline had been on his ass all game (very likely, especally considering how the game was going). Back Judge should have grown a pair also and called him off. Perhaps he was a (SWC) rookie. Like Colorado's (and Nebraska's) "fifth down", this play isn't discussed much, for obvious reasons.

Obvious reasons being that it was almost 20 years ago and is now utterly irrelevant. I'll echo previous posters - it sucked, it happens, we need to move on. Same gows for the SMU/SWC thing. Aren't we posted out on these issues?

I disagree with the relevance. Consider where this program might be today if the better team that night would have won. For UT, McWilliams might not have lasted the weekend. How would the rest of 88 and 89 (some of their worst years in decades) have turned out then ?

For us, a return to 1-A would probably have happened sooner than it did (95). It's not a stretch to realize what would have happened to recruiting back then.

Remember the buzz the wins in Lubbock generated. Multiply that many times.

A moment like that comes along very rarely for programs like ours, some never see one at all.

If if's and buts were CANDY AND NUTS we would all have a Merry F'n Christmas. It happened, it sucked but it was 18 years ago. $hit Happens, Life's a bitch and UT is always going to have more money than GOD.

College football is built on history and legend. This is our history. Forget it if you want, but it's part of what makes us who we are today.

History matters, but this is not for the history books. It was an insignificant game to UT. We didn't win.

But we talk about that game like we are on an episode of Married with Children; "that one time we should have won against UT and those cowardly refs took it away from us" then Al sticks his hand back in his pants, like that is our only glory.

I don't think anyone is saying we should forget it, but we need to move on. Yeah, if that didn't happen, the NT might be in a different position today. But we don't have a time machine, and even if the NCAA did give NT the win now, it won't change history.
