DENTON – Coach Darrell Dickey said Wednesday he has been pleased with the progress of senior linebacker Shawn Early, who tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his knee in spring practice following the 2004 season.

Early played briefly in spring practice this year and has moved well, Dickey said. However, Early faces a major obstacle Friday when the Mean Green practice in full pads for the first time.

UNT is still waiting for paperwork to be filed that would allow freshman defensive end Draylen Ross of Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis to begin practicing. ... Backup wide receiver/quarterback Jonathan Ieans has been released from his scholarship and is no longer with the team.
