NCAA to rename college football subdivisions

Posted 8/3/2006 9:59 PM ET

By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAYThe NCAA is doing a little re-labeling, eliminating the Division I-A and I-AA tags that officially separate college football's major and more modest programs.

Acknowledging frustration that the classification often brands an entire university as big-time or non-big-time, the association's Division I Board of Directors moved Thursday to rename the subdivisions. Beginning in December, they'll be known by their respective postseason formats.

What now are I-A programs — the Texases, Notre Dames and others vying for bowls — will play in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Georgia Southerns, Montanas and others now known as I-AA will play in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, alluding to the 16-team playoff that settles its national title.

Wouldn't "Division" flow better than "Subdivision?"

Bowl Division vs Bowl Subdivision.

Actually, the Division is still I for both so separately they would be subdivisions. But, I agree that this is pure silliness.

Division I-AAA (those colleges that are Division I in all other sports but do not field a football team) now becomes Division I-A? Or does it go away? Or does it remain the same? Or is that just a newpaper concoction that has no meaning?

Division does flow better than Subdivision but I think that Playoff is shorter and more explanatory than Championship, also. But someone, in their infinite wisdom probably decided that that wouldn't be politically correct.

Does this mean that the current Division 1-A will never go to a playoff?

"...in conjunction with the Dec. 22 I-AA championship, which will become the "Division I football championship."

Shouldn't that now become the Subdivision I football playoff championship? Make up their minds! mad.gif
