T3. North Texas

Predicted record: 4-8 Conf. record: 4-3

Best Player: RB Jamario Thomas, Jr.

Offense - The offense went into the tank last year with no production from the quarterbacks and a young, inexperienced line having all kinds of problems with its consistency. However, the running game wasn't bad and the pass protection wasn't horrible. Things should be better this year with Johnny Quinn leading a veteran receiving corps, Jamario Thomas ready to be one of the NCAA's top rushers again with a veteran line to work behind, and experienced quarterbacks that can't be any worse than they were last season.

Defense - Last year was a disaster, especially against the run, and now adjustments have been made to fit the personnel. With few good linemen to work with and several great linebacker prospects, the D will go to a 3-4 with the strength at outside linebacker thanks to Maurice Holman and Phillip Graves. Safety will also be a positive with Aaron Weathers and Steve Warren returning, but there are major concerns at corner. The front three has to be much, much stronger against the run after allowing 221 yards per game.

This season will be a success if … North Texas wins the Sun Belt title. It'll be a major, major accomplishment considering the conference road schedule, but after the past success, nothing else but a trip to the New Orleans Bowl will do.

I don't agree with their prediction that the Sun Belt will not win ANY OOC games.  I believe NT will win at least one against Tusla, Akron, SMU or LaTech...

if we do not win at least 2 of those games I consider it another OOC failure. We could not ask for a better OOC schedule

I'm totally in agreement. Picking them 2nd kills all credibility for me. Plus, look at this little note they have about FIU:

" This season will be a success if … FIU finishes second in the Sun Belt race. It'll go into the season dreaming of winning the title, but there's not enough depth and there's still a D-IAA level of overall talent that'll keep the promising team from falling just short of its goal."

Now they say our seaon will be a success if we win the title and that anything short of that will do but we're supposed to finish behind a team that has "not enough depth" to win the title?

That wasn't the part that upset me, Emmitt, it was the last half of that statement. If they still have a Division 1AA level of talent, what does that say about the six that are supposed to finish behind them? Now, that really loses credibility.

      Mountain West looking to add NIU/Toledo

      When CUSA last imploded both schools were invited to join the MAC as a package. WKU was all in, MTSU was not so they were both stuck in CUSA. N. Illinois , certainly much to my surprise, is moving to the MWC , who might be in the market for another football only school. The MAC bylaws require their members to place all their sports in the conference so unless they are changed N.Illinois must find a new home for their 'others." U.Mass is rejoining the MAC so they probably will stand pat. I think the N.Illinois victory over the Fighting Irish may have gone to their head plus their fans are tired of weeknight games that make it hard to attend for those who live out of town.

      A Volleyball Coach To Consider??

      Hodge has us more than middle of the road in the AAC. We are definitely in the top 3. If it was not for a bad shooting night for our two top scorers against Memphis, we would be at the top.

      Who did better? PAC 12 or Mountain West?

      I can't disagree with anything you're saying if ACC comes poaching and we're sitting here with Rice, Tulsa, and ULM/LAT as our most local conference peers. If that is the case, and it's a somewhat likely scenario, we need to be looking into the PAC as a viable option and not hush-hush turning them down. If anything, we probably should be lifting our skirt a little bit to keep it open as an option.

      Power Conferences making their move to take full control

      Seems the b10/sec are so worried about making sure they generate the absolute most revenue versus their peers that they’ve lost sight of what excites people about college sports in the first place. Until one of them relents and settles for setting caps in spending, and potentially sharing revenue, I don’t see how this changes. I think that the power brokers believe that most current fans will just adopt their local big state or closest big brand and continue to follow college sports. Time will tell if they are right. For me, I will not. If it gets to the point where UNT no longer has a chance to be in the pool, my interest will evaporate overnight. Maybe they don’t care and assume that enough will that they’ll keep growing their own brands and revenues.

      Appreciate the insight and agree about how we pick our HS recruits. the potential upside is that he apparently has a Purdue offer, so a solid Power gig thinks highly enough of him, too, to bring him in.
