Rivals listed the most well-known athletes ever to wear 1-99 on their jerseys. This is the only one on the list from a Sun Belt school:

#75 Joe Greene, DT, North Texas (1966-68)

A lot of players perform so well they earn a nickname, but how many inspire a mascot for their university? North Texas State – as it was called then – was merely known as the Eagles before 6-foot-4, 270-pound Joe Greene became a dominating force at defensive tackle. Greene's play led to North Texas adopting Mean Green as an unofficial nickname and eventually as its official mascot. North Texas was 23-5-1 in Greene's three seasons. In those 29 games opponents averaged less than 2 yards per rushing attempt. One pro scout raved about him: "He's tough and mean and he comes to hit people. He has good killer instincts. He's mobile and hostile." He was so talented that he was named consensus All-American in 1968 despite playing at an obscure program.

Also considered: Orlando Pace, T, Ohio State.

SIGH.... although that sounds like a good story it's not true. Joe Greene didn't get tagged with that nickname until he was a rookie in training camp. I've seen a NFL films clip where Joe Greene explained the source of the nickname. He said since he came from North Texas where the defense was nicknamed the mean green, one of the vets in camp tagged him Mean Joe Greene and it stuck.

On another note, it's nice to see rivials.com plagerize a column that Ivan Maisel did earlier this summer on ESPN.com.

Well, no one has to know that. biggrin.gif

I was glad to see Sonny Sixkiller make it on the list. He was a great quarterback at Washington with a poor team. The only number they were unable to find a player good enough to make the list with was 69.

In college football, there's enough "players" representing 69 very well especially at UT-Knoxville. biggrin.gif
