DENTON (7/10/2006) - The University of North Texas has announced its 2006-07 women’s basketball schedule that features a season-opening game in the Preseason WNIT against the Baylor Bears on November 10.

North Texas is one of just 16 teams in the nation that has been invited to play in the prestigious tournament.

“Being invited to play in the WNIT I think says a lot for our program and where we are,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “It’s a great honor to play in a tournament like this and it will be a great atmosphere with Baylor just one year removed from winning the national championship”.

The Mean Green will face seven teams that made the post-season last year, including five teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament.

Following the battle against Baylor to begin the season, North Texas will travel to face Hampton and Williams and Mary. The home opener for North Texas comes on November 25 against Loyola-Chicago.

The Mean Green will face Prairie View A&M on November 28 before embarking on the second longest road trip in school history.

North Texas will play nine straight road games before returning to home. The road trip includes battles with in state rivals UTEP, SMU, and Texas A&M. Not since the 1986-87 season, when North Texas played 10 straight road games, has the Mean Green been away from home for so long.

“There are a lot of road games but I’m really comfortable with this group’s ability to play well on the road like we did last season,” said Slinker. “The schedule also presents a lot of regional rivalries and chances for our fans to see us away from home”.

The Mean Green will play 18 games in the Sun Belt Conference this year and begin defense of their Western Division title on December 16 at New Orleans. North Texas will host three-time defending conference champion Middle Tennessee on January 24.

The 2007 SBC Tournament will be hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette and played March 2-6.
