A clarification

Let me clarify the opening sentence from our previous letter about Fry Street [June 11], “Preservation of a cultural heritage is important, but the Fry St. area isn’t that.”

Culture, as defined by Merriam-Webster:

1: Cultivation, tillage.

2: The act of developing the intellectual and moral faculties especially by education

3: expert care and training

(“beauty culture”).

4 (A): Enlightenment and excellence of taste acquired by intellectual and aesthetic training (cool.gif: Acquaintance with and taste in fine arts, humanities, and broad aspects of science as distinguished from vocational and technical skills

5 (A): The integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon man’s capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations (cool.gif The customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group © The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes a company or corporation.

6: Cultivation of living material in prepared nutrient media; also: A product of such cultivation.

Possibly 5 (A) may come close to Fry Street: Transmitting the knowledge of the “slacker lifestyle” to succeeding generations. Or 5 (cool.gif and 5 © as enunciated by Dean Wormer from Animal House: “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.”

And we all know there is too much of No. 6 going on in combination with 5 (cool.gif and 5 ©.

Once again, let’s create an area that ALL of Denton’s citizens can enjoy!

Dan Shea,

Denton
