NCAA to consider limiting text messages

11:01 PM CDT on Thursday, June 22, 2006

The NCAA Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet has agreed to sponsor legislation that would restrict the use of text messaging and other forms of electronic communication between coaches and prospective student-athletes. The proposal would limit the use of "computer mediated communication" to Monday-Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The proposal would eliminate any such communication prior to Sept. 1 of the prospect's junior year. The legislation specifically exempts e-mails from the restrictions.
