2006, 69th ANNUAL TEXAS-OKLAHOMA OIL BOWL UPDATE

Recommended Posts

I had a fantastic time at this years Oil Bowl. Texas won 17-0 after both sides were tied 0-0 through most of the game. There was a real good crowd on both sides despite the strange looking sky all night and lightning off in the distance. One bit if unsettling info I recieved was that Coach Hayden Fry was to attend the Oil Bowl game banquet last night in order to introduce SMU's Jerry Levias into the Oil Bowl Game Hall of Fame. But coach Fry couldn't make it due to the fact that he is reportedly in poor health at this time so our prayers go out to the legend. Here's to a speedy recovery. Also, it was being discussed by several of the locals who annually attend the game that this 69th annual Oil Bowl game could be the last? I certainly hope that's just a bad rumor?

Straight to the business at hand:

NT signee Tim Patton did not play in this game and was not listed on the game roster although he and two of his high school teammates QB-DB Randy Palmer(Iowa State) and WR Michael Barnett (Nebraska) had a sponsor spot in the game program along with photos. In that same ad Patton is listed as committed to NORTH TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY. rolleyes.gif

I had the pleasure of meeting NT Signee Nick Foster from Allen. I welcome him and his family into the Mean Green Nation. They seem like great folks. Nick is an impressive looking O lineman measuring 6-2, 340lb.

Here is #72 Nick Foster(North Texas) during introductions:

Both sides ran the ball most of the time so I got to see Foster run block quite a bit as he started and played most of the game.

As you can tell right away Foster stands out compared to other players on the field. The guy on Fosters' right is #70, North Crowley's Jason Fox who is going to Miami Fl. He and Foster started and anchored the right side. The shorter kid to Nick's left, #50 is Southlakd Carroll's Bryce Buford. He started 34 games for SLC at Center and is not playing football next season and lists Tarrant County Junior College. I suspect if grades were not the issue with him that his size(5-8, 225) might be the reason he didn't get picked up. Small or not, the guy was out there throwing people around and seemed to be the leader of the O line for Texas tonight. I really enjoyed watching him having fun out there and wish him all the best too. He, Foster and Fox just completely dominated all night long.

At first glance at Foster's listed size one might wonder if he could be a bit too large? But I was very impressed with his play from the start in which temperatures at kick off time was hovering around 96 degrees, yet his intensity and agility never slowed. In fact it was late in the game when Texas took the lead so conditioning wise he was impressive as he was on the field for most of it.

As I mentioned before he appears very agile for his size as he was asked to pull both directions to the outside and in.

Here he is Pulling to the outside that resulted in a solid pancake in which Trinity's Nance #30 turned back inside for 8 yards:

Here he is pulling to the inside, taking out the right DT #61 with a solid pancake and creating a large hole for Mineral Wells' Kelvin Thompson(Red Helmet with ball). Thompson(West Texas A&M) by the way was easily one of the more impressive speed guys on the field along with Trinity's Dimitri Nance(Arizona State).

Let me just say that overall I think we have a potential Big Nasty in Nick Foster for the future. Right away at the beginning of the game Texas drove inside Oklahoma's 20. However, an altercation broke out between both side, in which one Oklahoma kid made the mistake of getting in Fosters' face after the play and got "Frisbeed" for about 3 yards by Foster. Everyone assumed the flags would be offsetting but for whatever reason they all resulted in about 35 or 40 yards of penalties against Texas. Eventually Texas would end up punting. When the offense all got to the side lines the Texas coaches were furious and got nine yards of ass and Foster got the most of it although I could tell he had a sly grin on his face the whole time. After the ass chewing all of his teammates were coming up and giving him props for the throw down. You could just tell that Foster loves the contact and has the size to make LOTS of CONTACT. So I'm excited about him coming to NT and he said he was really looking forward to camp in August. My hat's off to coach Van Malone for finding him prior to leaving the NT program this past spring.

This is Brent Brown, (#87 white jersey, red helmet), Charlie's little brother. He started at wide out for Oklahoma and looked to be everything we have read about him. He's fast, very fast and had the Texas DB's running all over trying to cover him as #84 Waco University's Perrish Cox(Oklahoma State) seen here realized all night long. As I said earlier, both teams ran most of the time, and when the QB's threw they were having a hard time hooking up, I assume from timing issues and such. But late in the 3rd quarter the Oklahoma QB found Brown on an out route, who turned it up field for an extra 12 to 15 yards. Along with his speed he has excellent hands. When the ball got to him it disappeared like it did when Blount would catch the ball. I was very impressed with him. Northern Colorado won't be dissapointed in signing him. Considering we only signed JQ at the insistence of Kelvin Martin you have to wonder if we didn't truly blow it with BB? Time will tell.

Over all I was amazed at how much incredible talent that was on the field tonight that is listed either as undecided or committed to non 1-A programs. 41 players to be exact. . Considering some of the major D1-A signees these other 41 kids were playing beside says a lot about how much talent there was available prior to the signing period? D1-A signees such as Fox who signed with Miami FL, Creekview's Jeremy Beal who signed with OU and is considered one of the nations top recruited LB's, and Trinity's Nance who signed with Arizona State, just to name a few. And I'm still shocked that the Thompson kid from Mineral Wells is going to West Texas A&M. North Texas didn't sign a RB this year. Besides the fact that he led Texas in rushing, he certainly looked to have the speed we are used to seeing but didn't get an offer from us or anyone else?

There were several of our NT players in attendance to see this game and all said the offseason has been very busy for them. They are ready to erase the momories of the previous season and are looking forward to getting it on in training camp.

And finally, what's an Oil Bowl report without showing you the Oil Bowl Queen nominees?

The girl third from the left is from Denton, can't remember her name. The girl in the middle in the aqua dress won Queen, although I had my money on the local girl from WF in the Peach dress, 1st on the left?

Thanks Rick. That was a superb report and the pictures really added to it.

Thanks for the report, Rick. I think if Foster from Allen (my old high school. smile.gif ) can lose 15-20 lbs he'll be a monster. Hopefully that would happen, but IMO even if he doesn't he would be an above average O-lineman for NT. Looking forward to seeing him in action. Any idea why Patton didn't play?

Rick, how about the Texas kicker? He played at McKinney North. Great athlete. Kicked great the past two years with numerous touchbacks.

I do not believe he signed anywhere. Heard he was walking on at OU?

NT needs a kicker.

Give me your thoughts.
