You're crazy - SMU's total spend was not even that out of line by SWC standards. The other poster saying SMU was arrogant and hated was correct, and we didn't have the aircover of local media like they do in, say, Austin. Read The Pony Trap for a good view on the size and nature of all the other SWC violations and comparison of the severity of their punishment indexed against their size and media value. So yes SMU was not totally innocent in provoking backlash but paying has been continuous from the 1930's on. Why do you think the big blue bloods hate NIL? They have the most money, they should love it shouldn't they? Their under the table pay infrastructure isn't a competitive advantage anymore especially with free transfers. Can't buy up all the talent and lock it down on their bench. We are in the LEAST money corrupted era ever because it's out in the open above the table. -
