Tennis: North Texas hires Lama to coach Mean Green women’s program

07:52 AM CDT on Monday, June 12, 2006

Sujay Lama has been hired as North Texas’ new women’s tennis coach, UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said Sunday night.

Lama posted a 108-84 dual-match record in eight years as Illinois women’s coach, including a 60-34 mark in Big Ten play, before resigning on May 5. Lama led Illinois to five NCAA Tournament appearances and had the Illini ranked 16th nationally in the spring of 2004.

Lama will take over a UNT program with a new home. The Mean Green moved into the Waranch Tennis Pavilion, a $3 million, 12-court facility, last season.

Lama replaced Dawna Prevette, who resigned after leading UNT to a 6-18 record last season when the Mean Green lost in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Perhaps she can recruit some Russians that look like Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikovia.

Attendance would improve  laugh.gif

FYI it is a HE!!

He is originally from Nepal

I will reiterate though that this is a great hire. Experience at Ill., plus several years at Florida when they were a perennial Top 3 team.

I am excited for the school and the future of the tennis team.
