i recently posted a question on beltboard.com/forum asking what all the sbc schools consider their biggest non conference rival-although each school seems to have an obvious answer, me and some of the others couldnt think of who ya'll would consider to be nt's biggest non conference rival-i suggested new mexico state since on the football video game, ea sports ncaa football 2006, it lists ya'll as rivals....is this right?

Not really. Few NT people know anyone from that side of the planet, and even fewer have been there to see us play and beat them. So I'd say not New Mexico St. Other considerations might be Texas Tech, SMU, TCU, and then some of the SLC schools who we used to be in conference with, although we haven't played any of them since leaving the SLC. As far as this season goes it will be SMU come Sept 9th. NT folks just cannot stand the pony planet. Win or lose, the rivalry will be freshly reinstated I'd say.

And in 2007 when NT goes to SMU.

another question-i know all texas schools have "hand signals" that symbolize which school they're offiliated with-what is yours? (i'm gonna assume its claw since NT's mascot is a bird but doesnt baylor also have the claw as their hand sign?)

The girls at the top of the page are doing it. The description is as follows:

"The eagle hand sign is our universal sign of pride and unity. Curl the thumb and index and middle fingers forward. The right and pinkie fingers stay closed against the palm."

Basically, we have a three finger claw. Baylor's "claw sign" uses all the digits.

SMU has played more games (31) against UNT than any other team, excluding former SWC members Arkansas, Baylor, Rice, Texas, A&M, RCU & Texas Tech. The next closes is Missouri with 24.

I believe that Baylor calls their sign a 'bear paw'.

The new hand sign that was changed from the original by a group of misguided individuals that instated themselves as our Traditions Committee back in 1995-96 isn't the correct hand sign.

Click Here and scroll to page 18. That's a correct NT Eagle Claw hand sign. Make a claw sign then lose the pinky somehow. Either curl it into a tuck to the palm, merge it together with the ring finger, or touch it's tip to the tip of the thumb. However you get rid of it is just fine, but just get rid of it because everyone knows that Eagles have 4 claws on each Talon, not three. We're Eagles damnit, not three-toed sloth parrots?(I have no idea what that is but it doesn't sound good).

NTSU/UNT has had different rivals throughout the years.

IMHO:

The 60's and part of the early 70's I would say Tulsa (MoValley) and to some extent NMSU.

In the 70's I would say NMSU (Ind.)

In the early 80's I would say SFA (SLC)

In the BWC days I would say NMSU

The closest thing we have to a rival in the SBC is MTSU.

There are teams that we would like to say that we have a rivalry with such as SMU or TCU but we do not play them enough on a regular basis like the Iron Skillet rivalry between SMU and TCU or something like Texas & Texas A&M.

Interesting note: We have lost one only once (1990 by 7) to SMU in Denton.!!!

We have only played them once in Denton. 22 times at SMU, 8 at TxStadium. Perhaps we should insist they visit us in Denton the next 20 games.. LOL

Our biggest non-conference rival will always be SMU in my opinion.

I think for it to be a rivalry, both teams have to consider each other as such. SMU has a rival in TCU.

We don't have a non-conference rival. Do we even have a conference rival?

I agree we really hae no established rival. -- Rivals develop with time and both teams have to to consider it to be one. MTSU is my best guess at the moment.. They probably hate us the worse since we have defeated them several times which took them out of the New Orleans bowl. The best rivals are either because of location or because of championships on the line to the winner.....the best are both.

Tex/OU is both neighboring states and often national (now conference) championships are at stake. If we defeat SMU several times then their attitude will change and local rivalry would be established because their alums have to deal with our alums on a daily basis.

You mean, "we" as in North Texas WON the only game between NT and SMU that has ever been played in Denton, by 7, right?

As far as "Conference" rivals go I'd have to say MTSU. We are 5-0 against them and as you mentioned earlier, that first win truly stung them hard, and still should?

That season in '01 they came to Denton with a great season underway and was 5-0 at the time. We were 0-5 having just given ULM their first win in 12 games the week before, yet we still managed to beat Middle on October 13th. Later that season both teams finished with exact records in conference but NT went on to the first N.O. Bowl with an overall 5-6 record while Middle stayed home with an overall 8-3 record. In fact, Middle played a 10-3 LSU team to within 16 points later that season, that's how good of a team they had overall that year only to end up at home with no post season. And, to add insult to injury or rather to add to the rivalry, North Texas finally runs out of steam and has that horrible year that everyone in conference has been hopeing that we would have, yet Middle gets us at home and STILL loses to us? It's been great seeing them struggle against us the past 5 years even though I know it can't last forever.

Yup, the Rivalry should be on between us for sure?

Yep. You guys have had our number. 2001 was a horrible feeling for Blue Raider fans. 8-3 (with losses to UNT, Ole Miss., and LSU) and we sit at home.

Last year stung badly. We dominated you the whole game except for a couple of plays and we lose.

Our time will come and we will savor it when it happens. Hopefully it will be sooner than later.
