1913 to 1978 North Texas had a 56% winning ratio.

1979 to present we have a 42% winning ratio.

Since 1979 North Texas has had 10 winning seasons. Coach Nelson had 5 winning seasons in 9 years and DD has 3 winning seasons in 8 years.

If you think sucks, you should look at the crap products Army and Navy have been turning out the last few decades. They used to dominate.

What's their excuse now?

Id guess the fact that the best athletes would rather go to NFL "farm system" schools rather than serve in the military.

Dude Quoner-

The military academies have height and weight requirements now....

You may say look at the "Admiral" who played for the San Antonio Spurs!! He grew about 8-10 inches after his appointment to the Naval Academy.

Back in the day, what you were refering to, just about everyone was about the same size and no height / weight requirements.

Dude Quoner, meaning no disrespect, but pro players do not have any respectable longivity in the NFL (ect.)....so....if I had a choice of going to a school like Army, Navy, Air Force, Rice, Vandy, SMU ( ohmy.gif ) and get a "quality education" so I could make some serious bucks with well connected alum then ..... well I guess I would.

I have had the privilege to have met several ex-pro athletes who have spent all their money and are just living day to day.

I don't know if I would go around lambasting the service academies or schools like Rice or SMU if a student athelete chooses a quality education 1st over a "possible" shot at the NFL.

Day after day I figure if I say nothing but sarcasm to parody what's going on people will stop taking me seriously - yet here we are, 6 months later...

no one can be this negative about something like the service academies, who do you think I am - LoveMG?

And for what its worth, every year I hate seeing Navy line up against Notre Dame. The size of the two lines dictates the outcome everytime, but it is so cool to see the Middies put up what lately has been a pretty strong fight.

Perhaps "light years" was a bit of an overstatement on my part.

Reading this board is depressing. The assumption that every college that decides to add football will inevitabley pass us is ridiculous, and shows little faith in our alma mater. It is virtually impossible to say anything positive about our situation at NT without having to hear about how many Div 1AA programs are better than NT, or which other school has had more success in less time.

I doubt you'd find a single person that enjoys our lack of OOC success. And you would probably have an equally difficult time finding someone who would rather stay in the Sun Belt than join regional rivals in C-USA. Repeatedly stating such isnt an original thought or idea

The one thing these "accelerated" programs have that NT doesnt is money. As in, their fans are willing to back their talk with green instead of/in addition to lamenting on boards over percieved injustices in the past. The argument for this will inevitably be, "we arent going to donate until we know for sure the Univeristy is committed to athletics". Well I dont know what you are waiting for, there is a large project going on across 35 right now, you should stop by and see it some time. I dont know what else you need to see to convince you the university is moving forward. Now whether it is fast enough, is a whole other issue.

And if you want DD gone, wait 'til the team flops this year. RV will finally have justification. He's not going to fire a 4-time conference-winning coach for following it up with a terrible season due to inexperienced QB play largely credited to situations out of his hands. But beware once he does get the boot, you cant bring in a guy like George O Leary or Mike Price without cash.

A quick note: I should have also mentioned South Florida as well, which may be the best example of a school going right on by us athletically/football wise? They have played football a total of 9 seasons and are now a BCS school in the Big East. What is worse is that we went 0-2 against them in only their 5th and 6th season. I can't remember which school it was, either South Florida or FAU, (probably South Florida?), that at the time we lost to them their coaches were using trailer houses for office facilities to recruit to.

But I agree with your statements up above 1855. And it is depressing at times, especially during off season. But for me, when I say "A program has passed us by" I'm going by how schools such as Boise, Marshall who we were fairly even with during our 1-AA years, and then the latest mentioned schools FIU, FAU and USF and their admins collectively setting out to accomplish their goals. We don't have that here, at least not yet. I know our AD dept has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time but no one can argue that they have had to fight other entities on campus to accomplish what they have gained so far.

God Bless RV and Dr. Pohl.

I know that all of us are part of what I would estimate maybe the 8,000 hard core fans who show up and support NT athletics through the good times as well as the bad. But given that, look at some of the messages, NEGATIVE MESSAGES we have recieved in return for our support?

It cannot continue. As posted earlier in another thread, no one is going to invest in a product in which there is not a collective support base. And mostly, people want to be part of a winner, or at least a winning attitude. We have won some games in 3 1/2 of the past 5 seasons. But have we done it with a winning attitude? Or better yet, has the public seen/heard of the winning attitude coming from the voices of NT? Getting on public radio and national broadcasts telling america that "this place is a difficult situation", or that "Our kids know that when they sign on the dotted line here that their backs are already against the wall", or that North Texas is "....the most difficult job in our conference" isn't going to sell confidence to those who CAN invest for the future.

Would you buy a truck from me at top dollar if I told you I often have difficulty getting it started in the mornings and the transmission is slipping a bit when I tow with it? No. And the very fact that the poor public salesmanship has been allowed to continue by administration tells me they do not fully care about building the program up to where we all expect it to be.

1855 & FFR-

Do you think the main difference is that the coaching staffs/institutional fathers at those institutions know how to:

1. $ell the program?

2. Have above average P.R. $kills?

3. Know how to recruit?

I have never seen any of the aforementioned school's athletic facilities ..... but .....

1. Can they equal ours?

2. Was their playing field as good or better than Fouts Field??

3. Was their student support as good as ours??

Some of us who post on this board who are opposed to our current, and ongoing dilema in FB, still go to the games and support the team.

Yea, DD & staff may have won 4 SBC championships but his record still speaks for itself:

1. 3 winning seasons in 8 years.......39-55

2. As an OC at UTEP & SMU............13-31-1 (before being hired at UNT)

3. An abysmal record in OOC games.

4. Has taken UNT down to #161 (if you believe in the Saragin Poll....or as one poster said we should be ranked as high as 103 in D-1A). Anyway you cut the cheese, with Saragin, 42 D-1AA teams are ranked above UNT.
