.....The nations champion Pecan Tree, that is. Few know this, other than Plumm, but the worlds largest Pecan Tree resides right here in Weatherford, Texas. I had always wanted to see this thing but it's hard to find unless you know who to ask. It's in a dry creek bed on private property northeast of the courthouse about 3 and a half miles from town. Considering how little rainfall we get in this region it's mind boggling that a tree has grown to this size? It's estimated to be over 1,000 years old. When it was measured and certified as champion by the National Tree Register in 1994, it measured 251 inches in circumference, which is taken 4 1/2 feet up from the ground on it's trunk, 118 feet high and it's crown of branches spands 159 feet across. Today it's still growing and doing fine. In 1996 it's crown was the largest crown of any tree in the nation. I checked the current register and surprisingly it isn't listed as the national champ this year because it lost some points due to a high wind taking off some top and side branches. The current champ from Tennessee I'm guessing, will only be temporary as it's total points are only 431, whereas when originally measured the Weatherford Pecan rounded out to 519 points. That tells you how much larger of a tree, at the base, that it really is.

Can you see my Mean Green hat? It's about 7 feet up in the middle of the trunk.

The original certification from the Register.

The owners of the farm state that this tree was the state champion even before they bought the place 20 years ago. But they had never thought to nominate it as a national champion until someone visiting the tree suggested it. As it turned out it was more than twice the size of the current national champion from Georgia.

Word around the square in Weatherford is that private property has been sold to a developer from California who is going to tear that old rikkity, dump ass pecan tree down and plant 250 nice new Bradford Pear trees which were cloned from a single tree in Washington State.

Should bring a boon to the local economy of Weatherford when people from everywhere flock to check out the sea of sameness.

Nice story, but man FFR, ya'll need some more excitement in Weatherford if all you've got to do is hunt down a pecan tree! cool.gif

Well, just the other day I was at the Weatherford courthouse square downtown cafe (just down the street from where former Broadway star (& Peter Pan, of course) Mary Martin and her son, one Larry "J.R. Ewing" Hagman used to live and we were all talking about what kind of Parker County peach crop we would have this year. Seems pretty promising to hear some of the older nestors talk. I left that get-together pretty doggone' excited to tell the truth. Love those Parker County peaches and that begs the question: When's the last time any of you had a Parker County peach?..............Well.........that's too long! biggrin.gif

It probably has roots that reach to a rainforest in Indonesia.

That is magnificent. You never know what you will find on ths board. I am glad you posted that picture. I don't think I've ever seen a tree with a trunk that big.
