Patrick was not on the list of 15 Free Agent Rookies signed after the Rookie try-out this past weekend.

Hopefully he can land somewhere else.

I had a feeling they were looking for a big RB, not a shifty smallguy..

If anything, let's hope he goes to CFL and can prove himself.

ah yes the warren moon route...  biggrin.gif

...and Doug Flutie. wink.gif

He was too small for the NFL too.

As previously posted, he was only invited to the rookie mini-camp for a tryout, which I think is coming up the 13th and 14th or something like that. I don't think the Patriots mini-camp has happened yet.

...So you're telling me there's a chance. smile.gif

In a related note, none of the rookie free agents signed by the Patriots were running backs. Perhaps they're going to keep the best of the backs they have coming in over the weekend.

what RB's have taken this route? (CFL)

I would think a QB's career would be substantially longer than that of the average RB...

I can't think of any players who have made the leap from unknown to the NFL. The CFL is not the best route for a RB to go if they are looking for their break. Considering that in the CFL they play with only 3 downs, it's more of a passer's game, and RB don't get a whole lot of touches during the game. NFL Europe is probably a RB best shot at getting that break if they are looking for one.

I think you are right the Pats have not had their mini-camp yet. If you look around several unsigned players are invited to camps thoughout the league. The Cowboys just signed two who were invited unsigned to their camp last weekend.

TicketJohn sounds the most correct. None of the Free Agents signed by the Pats are rb's. GMoney said Cobbs was in competition with 2 other backs (one from Holy Cross) to get another rb into camp.

He isn't on the free agent list, but I think that was expected, given the report of GMoney on another thread.

He Hate Me aka Rod Smith? made the leap from unknown to XFL to NFL.

This article was just posted today:

A few more UDFAs for the Patriots were noted on Tuesday. Outside linebacker Pierre Woods excelled at Michigan and his height and athleticism will give him a shot at playing outside. Sam Smith played linebacker and safety at Delaware St, but has been compared to Polamalu with his hard hitting and tough play. There's also Brian Barthelmes, a 6-6 long haired mammoth lineman who is versatile and hard working.

Another UDFA was added Wednesday, Gemera Williams, a pre-med cornerback from Buffalo. He too was undersized, but played tough and large and would be another interesting addition to the camp. Kyler Hall, a safety, might be another possibility, but this past weekend, he had a tryout with the Lions. Just added were NT Remi Ayodele and DE Kader Drame, both big D lineman and it is rumored that RB Patrick Cobbs a small running back, from North Texas might be one of those who will be here for a tryout. There will be others added, of course.

.........

Garret Mills, a versatile player, able to play fullback, H back or tight end, will be valuable as well. Dependable, hard working and doing whatever it takes to win: these are all characteristics of a true Patriot player. In addition to those two, smallish change of back Patrick Cobbs was invited to camp. He could be a backup third down change of pace back.

Looks like he is behind the times? Or was Cobbs REALLY invited to the camp, just not signed?

If I remember right Hershal Walker went to the now defunct AFL, which is simillar to the CFL.

Also, Rocket Ishmail (although a WR, but mainly a return specialist) also went to the CFL before applying his craft at the NFL level

Not too sure about Rocket, but then again, these were two Heisman winners.

Thought it was the USFL?

I think you're correct on "The Rocket" going to the CFL first.

I think Lawrence Phillips also ventured to CFL before his failed attempt in the NFL.

The day after I saw it first posted on this site, the Dallas Morning News printed that Patrick Cobbs was indeed invited to the New England Patriots rookie camp on May 13-14. It made no mention of PC having signed any contract, which is what the 15 rookies previously mentioned in this thread did.

It's probably not a good idea to participate in any form of football drills or practices without a contract for insurance purposes, but I guess it's possible. Then again the DMN could have incorrect information?

Lawrence Phillips was the 6th overall pick by the Rams. He ended up in Canada after making the rounds in the NFL and couldn't stick in the CFL either.

Herschel Walker went to the USFL before the NFL, but not because of perceived lack of talent. The USFL offered players a chance to become pro earlier.

Ismail went to the CFL because he was offered a huge contract there. He would have been a high draft pick had he not taken the CFL offer.

PC could be similar to JR Redmond, who was a major part of the Patriots SB win over the Rams (remember the last drive?). His size isn't a plus for him, but I don't think it's nearly as big of a negative as we make it out to be. Speed is first priority, and he needs to demonstrate he can play with the step up in the speed of the game. If he can do that, his willingness and experience with special teams will help him out a lot. We all know Brad Kassell was brought in the Titans camp mistakenly as a deep snapper, and he appears to have a solid NFL career in the works. Like with Brad, I think it will come down to what he does when an opportunity presents itself.

Patrick does not leave to go to camp until Friday (May 12th). We'll all know something shortly thereafter. Just to repeat, these recent signings have no effect on Patrick. Next week will be a different thing!

Patrick Cobbs went through the same situation in getting into a D-1 program. He was overlooked because of his size. I suspect he has the same determination to make it to the league. I just hope he can get picked up somewhere. smile.gif

Any update on how the weekend went for PC?

On a side note, I was at my local Whole Foods this weekend and the kid ringing me up noticed my Mean Green t-shirt and commented on "That Cobbs Kid". He asked if he had another year left or if he'd graduated. He was impressed with Cobbs and also mentioned that NT seemed to be getting more and more talent in the program.
