small blurb hidden in Sports College Section.

Resigned after 5 seasons

Possible replacements IMO:

Scott Shankles @ SHSU

Paul Wagner (former Coach): not likely

Shane Zimmerman @ NCTC

Kim Kettleson @ TJC

Allison Ojeda: @ MTSU and a Tx Girl

hopefully there will be an actual search for an accomplished coach with experience

all of our smaller programs are an opertunity in my opinion. dont we have a new tennis complex? couldnt we hire someone with some serious credentials and throw a new complex in front of a recruit and this program should fix itself in just a couple of years.

Tennis: UNT tennis in search of coach

Prevette out after below-par season

Dawna Prevette has resigned as North Texas head tennis coach, UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal confirmed on Monday.

Prevette spent five full seasons with the Mean Green and led UNT to double figure wins in four straight campaigns before the team struggled to a 6-18 record this past season. UNT beat Middle Tennessee in its Sun Belt Conference tournament opener before its 2005-06 season came to a close with a 4-0 loss to Florida International in the quarterfinals.

“It was a tough year for Dawna,” Villarreal said. “She felt like she needed to move in another direction where she could be happy and successful.”

UNT has already begun searching for a new coach.

The Mean Green’s next coach will take over a program that is scheduled to lose only one senior from its roster and has the advantage of playing at the Waranch Tennis Pavilion. UNT opened the $3 million, 12-court facility this spring.

“We expect to be competitive quickly,” Villarreal said. “We wouldn’t have built a new tennis center if we didn’t expect to be competitive. This will be a highly attractive job and we would like to fill it as soon as possible.

“We want someone who can come in and build a program.”

UNT’s rebuilding project will begin in the Sun Belt, where the Mean Green have struggled at times the past few seasons. UNT was the seventh seed in the 2004 conference tournament, which is the high point for the Mean Green during their tenure in the league.

The Sun Belt has five women’s teams ranked among the top 75 in the nation, including conference champion Florida International. The Golden Panthers are ranked No. 39.

I heard the same quote from RV when he started the softball program, lets hope it rings true when they narrow the coach search down.

They are not being honest about the roster for next year. Have it on reliable source that they also lost the standout freshman, but are misrepresenting this loss in public communication. Not presenting an accurate picture to recruits, prospective coaches, or the NCAA. Still show her on the roster but not registered for any fall classes.

I am not surprised at the loss of another top freshman, they lost another leading into 2003 season who was playing #1 as a freshman.

Hopefully the new coach can retain all players, but the nature of collegiate tennis is a ton of transferring. This year the #1 player in the nation transferred from NW to Miami. TCU got the #7 player in the country after she transferred from USC.

So it happens and especially at lower D1 schools like UNT, where you also must tack on bigger schools preying on the top players.

Some good points about transfers. UNT policy of not allowing transfers is going to hurt any coach. This was done to the junior leaving at mid season who couldn't play in the spring, was threatened to senior who is staying, and is reportedly being done to the freshman. Hard to imagine a school trying to inflict this on students who want to leave. We've heard it comes from the AD who keeps it under wraps until someone asks to be allowed to transfer.

The player from mid-semester apparently was leaving no matter what, so release or no release I do not think she planned to pursue tennis at DBU. The freshman I read elsewhere is transferring out west (CA). Interesting on the senior, there obviously were some issues going on. Hopefully they get a new coach in before the end of the month in order to recruit a few new players.

Interesting note one of the recruits being looked at got stomped 1st round at NJCAA by a girl at NCTC, who did not even get a look from the local school here in Denton.

Recruiting prowess continues, wondering if the Hungarian recruit will still come in the fall? if her TOEFL score allows.
