NCAA recertifies UNT athletic department

08:42 AM CDT on Friday, May 5, 2006

The NCAA announced Thursday that it has recertified the UNT athletic department with two minor conditions.

UNT will be required to provide members of the athletic department and those involved with athletics outside of the department a notice emphasizing the importance of following NCAA rules and regulations. Notices are usually included in annual contracts. UNT was asked to find another method for providing notices since the school does not issue annual appointment letters to all employees.

Herman Totten, who was the Chief Report Writer for UNT’s recertification report, said the school would add notices about following NCAA rules in employees’ annual reviews. UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal was unavailable for comment.

Totten said UNT officials involved with the 18-month recertification process were pleased with the outcome. Universities are required to go through the recertification process every seven years.
