I had some concern when he was behind Peachey and Eidd in the spring. I also wondered why a second team Juco All-American wasn't listed in the Top 100 potential recruits. Maybe this was at the request of the coaching staff.....

It could also explain why he was totally absent from the spring prospectus. I just thought it was incompetence on the part of the person writing the prospectus.

It could be that he left at the request of the coaches. But it could also be a case of the player feeling that his position with the team was mis-represented during the recruitment process ie "come here kid and you'll be a starter".

With JC All-American credentials seems that he'd expect to be a starter and maybe didn'd measure up ?

Has there ever been a JC recruit that wasn't some sort of All-American ?

Actually most of the recent NT JC recruits are not even first team all conference. Only other jucos with All American mention that I can think of that DD recruited are Bense and Pruitt.

I don't think we should be discounting the Juco All-American thing. It ISN"T something that every Juco player gets. This player just didn't work out for us.................that is a real shame too.

Well, that sucks. Wasn't he our highest rated recruit coming in this year? Whether or not he could have contributed immediately to the team, it still isn't good to lose your top recruit this quickly.

The only one to make the Top 100 JC prospect list was Roy Loren. Of course, Stanley was a 2nd team JC All-American which was the highest acclaim of any of our signees but for some reason did not appear on the list of best college prospects.

Throughout our history, we've had a really mixed bag with Juco recruits. Some have been truly outstanding (in fact, Aaron Weathers on the current squad fits that description) while others have never really gotten out of the starting gate (Travis Thompson comes to mind).

You're right though. It really sucks to lose someone that you were counting on this early.

Jack, who would you say was the most successful JUCO that NT ever signed?

My vote goes to John Love (65 & 66), 144 receptions (third all time) and 2977 total all-purpose yards (7th all time). All that in two years.

Did any of you attend spring training? Stanley was tiny compared to the rest of the line and never once did I see him work out with the first line. Not once. Still, I'm curious as to why we wasted time recruiting him? We did, "recruit" him, right? If so, what a waste of time that was.

I know it was asked to me, but I would put my money on Kevin Galbreath -- MVP of the New Orleans Bowl. He was a work horse for DD.

All are welcome to make their own nominations. Kevin is a good choice.

In looking at the 02 press guide, it looks as if Vidal Carlin, the QB who was throwing to John Love during the 65 & 66 season was a JUCO player as well.

Carlin's passing totals for both years was 3233 yards. Not bad.

Tiny as in skinny or just short?

He's listed at 6'2' 290lbs, would you say that's inaccurate?

6'2" 290lbs is a decent size for a "non-BCS rolleyes.gif " guard or center.

It seems to me that Carlin came from either Tyler or Kilgore and was the best quarterback from a Juco that I can recall.

I don't remember all of those who were JC transfers but of those that I believe were, how about these......Cedric Hardman, John Baker, Johnny Mata, Mike Davis, and Barry Moore? All were either All-America or All-Conference. Moore even had a few more yards than John Love, and he did it with Ron Shanklin on the other side. I might even throw in Sears Woods, who although he only stayed one year, was instrumental in our greatest victory.

But, then again, it would be hard to choose against John Love.
