Mean Green Soccer Defeats SMU, 2-1

DALLAS (4/22/06) - The North Texas soccer team defeated SMU, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon to conclude its spring season.

Sophomore Heather Hutyra knocked in the first goal, and junior Kristen Campbell posted NT's second. North Texas led at the half, 2-1, and was able to hold the Mustangs scoreless in the second period.

"The win was a good way to end the spring season against an outstanding program like SMU," said head coach John Hedlund.

The Mean Green lost to the Mustangs in the first round of the NCAA tournament last fall after defeating them during the regular season. NT returns all 11 starters from the 2005 team that won the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the second year in a row.

nice to see us beat SMU again in soccer, but we have to remember unfortunately SMU beat us when all the marbles were on the table back in the fall. sad.gif

aww the obligatory facts come out. Would trade both of the pre-season and regular season wins for a win in the NCAA's

The win was a good way to end the spring season against an outstanding program like SMU,” said John Hedlund, NT head coach. “We had a successful spring with victories over teams like SMU and Oklahoma, and a strong performance against the Chinese National team.”

The Mustangs ousted NT from the NCAA tournament last season with a 3-0 victory. NT won the regular season game 3-1. The Mean Green returned all 11 starters from last year’s squad.

With the win, the Mean Green finished its spring season with a record of 4-2-1. The team’s most impressive victories were over the Mustangs and the Oklahoma Sooners, while its two losses were to perennially-ranked Texas A&M and the Chinese National Selection team.

“This is probably one of our most productive spring seasons with the results we’ve been getting against strong competition, so I couldn’t be more happy with it,” Hedlund said. “What these girls do in the summer with their training will translate into their performance in the fall, but as of right now, I think we look pretty strong heading into our fall season.”

meangreen61.... though it is nice to hear we did well against them and other spring competition, UNTbowler is right. the spring is meaningless and when it mattered most, we fell short. And we fell short bad... wasn't the score like 3-0?! that is a beating in soccer. But, we have next year to look forward to and we are returning all the starters which is very nice to hear. Lets make it to the tourny again and this time lets win a post-season game.

I think we may have gotten spoiled by the Soccer Teams success over the past few season, very similar to the football team. Hopefully the soccer team can continue building on the success, where the football team has not. That means make the NCAA tournament and adavnce a round or two.

Actually, contrary to popular pessimism, the win over SMU is huge. It proves, both to our girls and SMU's, that last year's regular season win was no fluke. It wasn't a case of "SMU had a down day and proved it in the tourney." We've now beaten them twice in the span of two seasons. If these two teams should face off again this year we'll have the confidence to face them head on and they'll have a warranted respect for what we can do.

Soccer isn't like other sports where the only thing that matters is post-season play. It is recognized that the best sides sometimes don't win it all. Look at the U.S. National team for instance. Not a single world cup championship in our history but we're #4 in the world, ahead of several teams that do have world cup wins.

      State fans showed up because they rightfully expected to win in this game. If the AD thinks they're going to depend on people to show up just cause NT has a team there, they are dead wrong. There are a few, but there are many many more who will not show up when they don't think their team will win. There are too many obligations and opportunities to devote precious time and money watching a team lose.

      After Morris and Sheffield transferred, how many here were actually expecting to win? Many of us were just hoping TXST didn't handle us like they did UTSA this year or Rice in last year's First Responder Bowl. Sure, it's the head coach's job to have his team ready to play and in position to win regardless of the adversity faced, but it's still incredible the performance Mestemaker had. Tonight was better than any game C. Morris has had since Memphis. Coastal Carolina lost their starting QB to the portal and got dog walked in their bowl game against UTSA in their own building. Yes, the loss increases our bowl futility streak to an active high, and it sucks to lose to an intrastate program in an inferior conference, but that shouldn't take away from Drew's game. The biggest disappointment to me was how badly we were outnumbered by TXST fans. We went from packing the lower level of the Cotton Bowl to being matched ON OUR OWN SIDE. Like our team, our fans also struggle to wear green. However, there should be optimism surrounding next season. Eric made a poor hire with his first DC obviously, but made the tough (but right) call in getting rid of him. Next year's presumed starter will be in his last year of eligibility, so no losing another 4000 yard passed before the bowl game. If we struggle to another 6/7-win season and bowl loss with next year's schedule, I think Eric's seat should be pretty hot again.

      So a lot of you think that NT is not deserving of your valuable fandom. I actually was proud of the team that continue to battle with a completely revamped lineup including a completely untested QB. Yeah and spare me the low expectations accusations that are usually leveled at anyone that dares to not rave and rant about a loss.
