Out of Conference Lopsided Loss to LSU,

[Green Grenade II]

I woke up this morning and was remembering some really interesting times and wins we have vs Texas Hicks (er, make that Texas Tech). We beat them 3 straight times in Lubbock at Tumbleweed Stadium (AKA Jones)!!!!!

1988-Texas Tech was romping past us, 24-3, and 24-10 at halftime. Red Raider fans were making fun of us! But Corky Nelson said something at halftime, and it was almost like the Mean Green stepped into a phone booth and came out as SuperMen and scored 19 unanswered points and stunned the Raiders, 29-24 at their season home opener!

1997-With Matt Simon at the helm, the Mean Green would snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat, and score late to win, 30-27. Jason Mills' TD pass to Bo Harrison in the enzone right in front of the Green Brigade was enough for the Lubbock Avalance Journal to post this headline on the Front page the next morning:

"Eagles Land on Tech...AGAIN!"

1999-with Darrell Dickey as head coach, we turned a 0-52 pounding to LSU into a following week romp over Texas Tech, 21-14! We actually led 21-7 at one point!

The folowing morning, Don Williams (columnist for the Lubbock Avalance Journal), said,"Spike...do the right thing and step down now!"

Years later, in Spike Dykes great book about his coaching experience, he said one of his greatest frustrations..."We just had trouble beating North Texas. They always played near flawless football against us."

SO, SPORTS FANS FROM COAST TO COAST...GO! MEAN GREEN!

---I think most of Tech fans in Midland had gone into mourning. Even several of them wanted Spike to leave-----and he had been a HS coach at Lee here before going to Tech. I made a point to wear my NT shirt and cap as much as possible the next week, after all I did not want them to forget the game the week before.....LOL
