After just two years at the helm, SMU will fire head coach Jimmy Tubbs, according to sources close to the situation.

Tubbs took over two years ago after spending 12 seasons as an assistant at the school and the previous two under Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma.

The Mustangs finished 14-14 in his first season and were 13-16 and 4-10 in conference play this past year.

The reason for the late timing on the decision was that SMU athletic director Jim Copeland was out on medical leave until Monday.

part of the violations comes from the coach giving his player a cup of laundry detergeant and also feeding a few others.

NCAA loves picking on the little schools, but refuse to touch the big guys and their green palms.

If all he did was what has appeared in print, that's pretty chicken$hit. The NCAA gestapo needs to get a grip on reasonableness.

Either there is a raging fire where this little puff of smoke is coming from, or the new AD has pressured the old AD to be the hatchet-man because he doesn't want any unpleasantness when he takes office. By the time this crap gets sprayed all over in the newspaper, you can bet that the nut-cuttin' is already done and they're just posturing the spin on it at this point.

Here is the link to the Dallas Morning News story:

I love this line from the South Oak Cliff coach regarding SMU:

"Dallas is probably the hot spot in the U.S. in basketball talent," Mays said, "and you've got a college right here that can get no one."

We SHOULD have recruiters all over the place down there. I said SHOULD - reality is probably much different. sad.gif

Oklahoma may be headed for NCAA jail.

OU investigated itself and decided 2 years probation and giving up 3 scholarships would be appropriate. The NCAA would not accept that and is going to investigate for itself.

Click here for an excellent analysis and insight into why the OU investigation is flying under the media radar.

Sounds like Sampson got out while the getting is good and is leaving the school scot free while they will suffer for his violations. dry.gif

Sorry Jeff Capel, maybe you should stay at VCU.

I think the coach that caused the violations can still be held accountable for some things cant he? If not, you're right, raw deal for the new guy...

SMU will never learn... the rules just don't apply to them.

________

From Yahoo:

Doherty, coming off a 15-13 season at Florida Atlantic, would replace Jimmy Tubbs, who was fired April 6 after two losing seasons and an internal investigation that uncovered NCAA violations.

Doherty's current athletic director at Florida Atlantic told The Palm Beach Post that a deal with SMU was close.

__________

---You can bet there is more to the firings than such minor things as soap and a few meals. There were serious matters or they were just using that as an excuse to fire him. I am guessing that with SMU's "dark" past that the NCAA keeps both eyes on them. Their football program got the death penalty in the 80's but I will bet the basketball problem there under Coach BLISS (same time) was just as rotten or worse. Bliss hasn't learned anything either.... he was the bad boy at Baylor a couple of years ago when all of that mess hit the fan.

----People may forgive but they don't forget..... SMU has been and is a rotten place and probably always will be.

SMU motto: What rules??? You mean the rules apply to us???.
