I was visiting with a friend this morning and asked if he had gotten caught up in the George Mason hoopla. He flatly said no and that he never pulls for a basketball team that does not have a football team. He thinks that basketball only gives a lot of small schools an edge against teams that have football. As you know, in order to have division one football you have to sponsor about 400 sports, while basketball only schools do not. Is it fair? Does it hurt mid majors who have division one football? Should it be changed? Curious at to what the green meanies think.

Your friend is an idiot. Really though, that is one of the dumbest things I've haerd in a long time. The unfair advantage goes to the schools in BCS conferences that get multi millions every year just for being in a BCS conference.

For whatever reason, schools on the East Coast tend to sponsor more sports than those in the other regions. Without looking at their website, I think Old Dominion sponsors sailing, lacrosse, field hockey, etc. etc. but no football.

One of my first surprises in coming to North Texas from Virgina was this lack of sports..where was the wrestling team, gymnastics, etc.

I suspect most of this comes down to distance and tradition. It is cheaper to put a women's volleyball team on a bus and send them 100 miles from Norfolk to Richmond than to put them on an airplane from Denton to Miami or Denver.

I would guess that George Mason sponsors as many or more sports than North Texas.

We could start LaCross, Duke has one and we could compete against them. That may be a set up deal but ESPN claims 15 members of that team has criminal records and that is not a set up.

Few Southern/SW teams have wrestling and I hope they keep that way. All these small sports cost a small fortune and bring in no revenue, nor do they help school spirit any noticable amount.

Lacrosse is popular all up and down the East coast, top Teams include Duke, Maryland, Princeton, Syracuse (until last year made 19 straight Final Fours), Virginia, and John Hopkins

With 30 thousand students it would be hard to classify GM as a small school.
