I can remember someone posting a link to a site that gave the all-time record we have against certain teams. Does anyone have that link?

I remember we are 4-4 all-time against TTech

Did we really get our petition for 1A rejected?

Almost every school forced into 1AA petitioned the NCAA and all were rejected. According to a post a while back from ArkstateFan, their petition came the closest to being allowed, but in the end none were.

I don’t remember the exact details, but there was when the split happened, there was absolutely nothing NT could have done to say 1A.

The paperwork to stay in 1-A was left on a desk until too late to submit it, or so I'm told by a person who saw it happen.   dry.gif

That the story I have heard. NT did not even apply to remain 1a as the AD at the time forgot to mail in the pettition. The AD could have been that incompetent but I have always believed that the Administration made the decision to drop down and join the Southland and the failure to submit documents was a bad cover story.

I was at the breakfast held for Eagle Club members back in '81 or so. Hurley came in and told the group that we would have the type of athletic program that the donors supported and asked for pledges right there. Obviously, everyone was caught by surprise and the committment from the breakfast was puny. The entire Eagle club was never asked about this question and before we knew it we were down to I-AA. The fix was in even before the breakfast. The major reasons given for the drop was lack of donor support and the advantages of being in a conference. As you may remember, at that time we were independent with no bowl affiliation or conference affiliation. I always thought that Hurley's approach was like a teacher going to the class room and telling the students that the curriculum for the class would depend on the wishes of the class....a complete surrender of leadership.

--- I-AA period was a dark period in North Texas history.... BUT at least we survived and made it back to I-A. UT-Arlington and Lamar as a result of being dropped back then dropped football completelyand West Texas (A&M now) dropped down several levels to a non-schlorship level....

UNT had more OOC WINS as a 1-AA (Rice, K-State, Texas*, New Mexico, TCU, La Tech, Texas Tech, SMUt, etc.) then we have since returning to 1-A. It's the Coaching, not the Division, that was the difference. dry.gif

We also had our first sell-out at Fouts field when we were 1-AA. Actually we had two sell-outs when we were 1-AA.

Besides coaching, one could argue that we had better promotions during that time.

I’ve heard the story as well.

The way in the 1AA rule was written, there was absolutely nothing NT could have done. To stay 1A, we would have had to have had higher average attendance the year before. There was no way you can fix that after the fact.

Or, we would have had to have our home stadium be larger. And it, too, would have needed to be completed the year before. And the way “home stadium” was defined we could not count either the Cotton Bowl or Texas Stadium as our “home” since we played more games at Fouts the year before.

The rule was set up in such a way that it would be based on the year before. No NCAA rule has been passed since that was structured that way.

A lot of schools petitioned the NCAA for an exception to the rule. It seems this petition was what was filed late.

The key fact to remember is not a single one of the petitions were allowed. None! Filing the petition would have been a waste of time. Arkansas State’s petition was the only one that got as far as a review and even it was denied.
