Did you notice that South Alabama is seeded 14, while Northwestern State out of the Southland is also seeded 14. Is the SunBelt just a glorified Southland?

NCAA committee has always worked with the theory that seeds can be shifted up or down one, as necessary, to maintain balance based on locations, scheduling requirements (BYU - I believe they always get a Thursday/Saturday bracket if they are in), etc.

YES.  sad.gif

Does this mean that we cannot even compete in the Southland? With six losses, it's ridiculous that USA got slammed into a first rounder with the Gators. Also, I noticed that the dreaded WAC didn't do too badly in the seedings. Considering the number of teams in their conference, they didn't do too badly at all.

Nevada is a well established program now so they deserve their high seedings. also Utah State has had a very program for the last 5-6 years or so.

If WKU would have won the SunBelt they might have gotten a 10-11 seed but USA upset changed all of that.

Those that compare the Belt and Southland in basketball are recent fans or have a poor memory. The Belt is a much stronger league in men's and in particular women's basketball. No, I don't think NT would be close to winning the Southland this year, but from top to bottom year after year the Belt is the better basketball conference.

The way things are set up right now, the selection committee has about 30 minutes to an hour to set the brackets (granted, some of it is already set by the time the selection show starts). But not only do you have complaints about who is in and out, but also who has the tougher bracket, where they play, and who was seeded too high or too low.

This would make for boring TV on Sunday, but how about the NCAA have all of the conference tournaments completed by Saturday, and the selection committee has all day Sunday to set the brackets.

I think this would be more accurate and less bitching from EVERYONE.

No, not even close. The Southland has 11 teams and we played SFA (finished 4th) and Nicholls State (finished 11th). We were head and shoulders above both in size, speed and talent. The Sun Belt is also an 11 team league where we finished 7th. The difference between the Southland and the Sun Belt in the Sagarin rankings is pretty close to the difference between the Sun Belt and the Colonial in basketball. The Colonial put 2 teams in the NCAA tournament and 2 teams in the NIT. We have a long way to go but it's not like the Sun Belt is keeping us down or anything. The Sun Belt was a step up from the Big West which was a step up from the Southland.

Southland-1 NCAA bid

Sun Belt-1 NCAA bid and 1 NIT bid

Colonial-2 NCAA bids and 2 NIT bids.

Southland advances in the tournament!

Northwestern State just upset Iowa.

Respect for the Southland, and, better yet, another game means more money to spread around the conference.

Does this answer any questions?

Johnny Quinn is my #1 seed.

Sounds as if some on this board has as much contempt for the Southland as the Big XII (and some others) do for the SunBelt.

Those who in live in glass houses should not throw rocks. Think about it.

At the selection "party" on TV, many announcers were thrashing the MVC (Missouri Valley). Now Bradley and Wichita are in the Sweet-16 (both have been in final-4 several times).

Remember UNT was a member of that conference until about 1975 when we decided to leave for greener pastures (hopefully the SWC). Louisville, Cinncinatti, and Memphis also left the MVC at the same time and formed the Metro which became CUSA and we did not join them.

We were in the toughest Basketball conference in America then (UCLA was the best team but the MVC was the best conf). Don't even try to argue ACC, SEC or SWC.... they had no black players until 1970 or later in most cases UCLA and the MVC was recruiting the Southern states blind.. That situation will never happen again nor will a run like UCLA's either largely because of the situation that existed.
