Swim Team Claims Fifth At Sun Belt Championships

Release: 02/18/2006

DENVER (2/18/06) – For the second straight year the Mean Green swimming and diving team leaves the Sun Belt Championships with a fifth place finish.

North Texas, who finished the meet with 257 points, trailed wire-to-wire champion Florida Atlantic as well as Denver and Western Kentucky who staged a fierce battle for second.

The Mean Green was led by the 400-freestyle relay team of Emilia Tudose, Devon Dlouhy, Betsmara Cruz and Bonnie Garcia Meitin. The squad finished fourth and set the school record in the event with a time of 3:35.54.

Garcia-Meitin also saw success in the 200-yard backstroke. The sophomore finished fourth with a time of 2:04.97, the second best time in school history.

Newcomer Alesha Oleson finished seventh in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.08.

Despite the finish at the conference meet, the 2005-2006 season will go down as one of the best in the program’s brief eight year history. The squad set nine school records and will lose only one athlete to graduation.

Final Standings

Florida Atlantic - 858

Denver - 790

Western Kentucky - 769

Florida International - 314.50

North Texas - 257

New Orleans - 250.50

Arkansas-Little Rock - 102

I know not many care about swimming, but this has got to be the most questionable team at NT. In their eighth year, they managed three fourth places in the Belt meet. They are lauded for school records but are completely non-competitive in the conference. Finishing 600 points out of first place and only beat out a UNO team with multiple problems and only 9 team members and another partial funded team with 12 members. Does anyone know why this team is consistently non-competitive?

That's so sad.

At North Texas, the main barometer for measuring athletic success is by comparisons against our own past futility. It seems everybody avoids comparisons to actual competition.

look at tennis since we joined the Sun Belt we have placed no higher than 6th

then they just lost to SHSU this past weekend.

Played 2 matches in CO Fri/Sat lost both 6-1 play Denver tomorrow expect a 7-0 rout. Team has never beaten a Top 75 team. This year won all but 1 match 4-3 and that was 6-1 over a weak Idaho team.

Not looking good for them to place higher than 10th this year.

I work with someone that is close to the Swimming and Diving program. This person has mentioned to RV that there are problems with the coach, but I don't think anything has happened.

Adler, that's what I have been saying for several years now. Read any of the writeups on the Mean Green sports board, whether it's golf, track, swimming,

tennis, etc., and you will find some of the most sickening spin you'll find anywhere. They only compare results to our own freakin' prior teams, never against the competition. "At a recent meet held at (you name it university), so and so swimmer beat the privious NT school record in 100 meter butterfly by a full two seconds".

When you dig deeper, you'll find that our swimmer came in 6th place out of 6 swimmers in that heat; forget that she never qualified for the finals. But hey, she beat the NT record!! Or the infamous golf team that comes in 15th place from a field of 18 teams. But hey, the team as a whole did better this time around than last years team.

Our not being able to truly compete in just about all the sports is truly disgusting, and quit honestly, wearing thin on this Mean Green Alum. mad.gif

Well, when you expect mediocracy, thats what you get. RV seems to only expect that...he needs to put his money where his mouth is. He always says we expects nothing but the best, but he seems to keep coaches around for years and years that have no better than .500 seasons.....and maybe 1 winning season in there somewhere. Anyways, when he begins to demand excellence he'll get it!
