North Texas BB, both men and women is not up to par to where we should be. both programs have been given alot of patience....nothing is adding up on both sides.....

Slinker and Jones both know that WINS= Attendance

Men's

when NT won against denver, attendance jumped to 5,000 (including our frats, spirit groups and community) against U of South Alabama, when we looked mediocre against them at home attendance was back at the 1,000 level as usual....

Woman's

when Slinker lead a disgraceful game against FIU, ( you cant get any lowly than FIU), their attendance and record took a nose dive....

these coaches are well aware of what they are doing, before each game, at NT if you can show us what you got, the fans are there to see what you have to offer, like most other college programs...

As far as if JJ or tina slinker both deserve to get the boot, that is RV determination.

By the way, Has RV fired anyone since being AD?

Well, if you like mediocrity, then we're o.k.

But, you are right when you say wins=attendance; especially with the men's program. Strangely, it seems to me that they play their poorest when we have our best attendance, which is why only the diehards return.

Tina Slinker has survived 17 years on a very sub-par record. Barring winning the SBC tournament or a NIT appearance, surely there can't be any reason to allow her another year.

Johnny Jones is as nice a person as I've met and I really with that he could have success with this team. But, after five years of trying, it seems obvious that we are going to get a team that will hover around .500. The talent that he has recruited has been pretty good but the team often looks as if they are playing street ball.

I don't know what it is with North Texas basketball. The men have had two winning coaches that I can recall and the women none. Of course, Slinker has been the coach about 90% of that time during the women's program. If we ever aspire to be in a better conference, I believe that we need to have a competitive basketball team (which equates to decent attendance). We're just not getting it done with the present staff.

As to your question about the AD ever firing anyone, I'm not sure. I thought that he was the one that fired Trilli but it's possible it was Helwig. Maybe in some of the minor sports. The softball coach resigned but I'm not sure of Rick's role. I believe that he hired Cassie Headrick, the volleyball coach, but I don't recall the circumstances for her predecessor leaving. Ditto for both golf coaches. Although he may not want to, he seems capable of doing whatever is necessary to get the program to where it should be and, even if that includes parting company with some of his hires.

If I remember correctly, Dr. Pohl fired Trilli just after he fired Helwig and before RV was hired.

after telling Trilli that no decision would be made until after a new AD came in, also they fired him the day after he returned from his player's funeral. mad.gif

After releasing Helwig, Dr Pohl brought Gene Stallings in as an advisor. Coach Stallings reported " I'm sat watching a Division 1 team with 14 scholarships trail an NAIA team with 0 scholarships for almost the entire game. North Texas basketball has serious problems".

Trilli's fate was sealed. Dr Pohl needed the new Athletic Director to be able to concentrate on hiring a new basketball coach and not have to deal with firing Trilli so he pulled the trigger himself.

There has been improvement during the Jones years. North Texas went from winning 4 or 5 games a year to winning 13 or 14. Respectable at least, but not good.

Is average good enough?

Is there reason to believe that the winning percentage will improve?

Is 5 seasons long enough to rebuild a program that was destroyed during the Trilli years?

Although he didn't predict records, how is Coach Jones performing to the other goals he set when he first arrived?

I believe the answer is no. RV has not fired a head coach since his arrival. He was on the cusp of pulling the trigger on DD, then came the conference winning streak.

I really want JJ to keep his job, but this should have been the year to get over the hump. He seems like such a class act, I would have a hard time releasing him. If he keeps his job one more year, we need to see post season play. The same can be said about Dickey and Slinker. If we don't see post season play this year... bye.

RV may have to finally get out the pink slips.

Slinker -> should get the boot at the end of this season.

Jones -> One more season. A conference title or he gets the boot.

Dickey -> Upcoming season requires a 7-5 record with a win vs SMU. Anything less and he gets the boot.

What size boot does RV where? We'll need to know in order to purchase one with at least a steel toe.

Question, Got5OnIt,

Slinker -> She should have been fired prior to this season, but with a 17-8 record, should be better, and the chance at a 20 win season, is this the time to fire her?

JJ -> What good will a 6th year do? It shouldn't take that long to turn around a program. Considering the team's performance earlier in the year and now the typical mid to late season losses, JJ should go after this year.

DD -> It's a dead horse!

I think there was an article back in January in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram stating that Rick V. plans on giving Tina Slinker a contract extension after the season is done. The article went on to state that he hadn't done it yet because he didn't want to take focus away from the season.

Unless she coaches the team to a conference title this season, she gets the boot.

It's better than 17yrs, right?

NEVER!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

Regarding Slinker, we need to keep in mind that she does have a 17-8 season in a really good conference. Sagarin has the Sun Belt women's BB conference ranked 11th above the likes of Conf. USA, MAC and WAC....

I don't think we can compare her situation to JJ.

DD has us ranked really low in the worst football conference and JJ's has us in the middle of an average men's BB conference (18th of 32 per sagarin)...
