"Without (football), a university has a big gap in it that is not filled," Falwell said. "Basketball has a great appeal, but football is still king in America.

The men's basketball team already has been to the tournament. The women reached the Sweet 16 last year.

Of all the fires Jerry Falwell has started with his mouth, this nugget might be among the more incendiary:

"I refuse to die," the famous televangelist told SportsLine.com this week, "until we get this done."

What, a 900-foot Jesus? More fundamentalist doctrine?

No. Football. Falwell, 72, wants to preside over a Division I-A football program in his lifetime. A big-time D-I program, one that could take the field against Notre Dame some day on even terms.

More than that, the Liberty University chancellor is fast-tracking the sport. Liberty's I-AA program went 1-10 last year. The coach was fired. The AD resigned.

Falwell quickly hired Virginia assistant Danny Rocco. A new 36,000-seat stadium has been promised. A $7 million football complex opens in June.

"Just in the last year," he said, "we've decided to take football (to another level)."

The goal is for I-A to happen in the next decade. By then Falwell, who underwent heart surgery last year, will be 82.

"The issue," he said, "is getting it done soon enough for me to see it happen."

Lord willin' and the interest rates don't rise, Falwell's vision will be realized. America will have a fundamentalist Christian football superpower.

Don't be alarmed. ACLU vs. LU isn't on the schedule yet.

What Notre Dame is to Catholics and BYU is to Mormons, Liberty can be to evangelical Christians.

There's not a thing wrong with that, though Liberty's burden will be great. The school has a chance -- no, a duty -- to get it right.

      Agreed we looked fast and the green popped off the turf. It was cool seeing Wyoming’s traditional brown and yellow and white combo. After all those years living in mountain west country I couldn’t get over watching the Cowboys in Denton against our Green. Nice fan turnout from the gold. GMG

      Sell Out Next Week?

      I think everyone knows this. It doesn’t make the practice any less dumb. With everything being electronic nowadays they could easily announce the actual attendance. Last night was a jarring example. There weren't more than 22-23K. And what annoys me the most is because of the announced attendance, last night is officially the 5th best attended game in stadium history, which is total BS.

      Did we dump the 3-3-5 for good?

      I mean I’ve spent lots of time talking about this defense (which I do not love) but there aren’t too many gaps. The scheme accounts for gaps, but relies on excellent linebacker play to go along with excellent safety play. For me, it always comes down to the defensive line. In 2013, we ran a 4-3 base and Flusche et al generated pressure with that front four and it made the whole group very good. The next year with the same base we were leaky. The difference was the line. Reffett had a solid defense with Nate Brooks and Kemon Hall at corner and would bring LB blitzes (to make up for the lack of great line play) and it worked. The next year they struggled as the corners couldn’t man up and the pressure was late. Littell’s defenses post Reffet were awful until he lucked into the Murphy twins and upset top 25 UTSA. Mazin Richards helped him get enough to get to the title game the next year. Last year? Awful line play. This year? Better line play. It’s always about line play no matter how many you put out there. Get pressure on the QB or else you lose.

      What's at stake as Pac-12, Mountain West and American Athletic Conference plan their futures

      Memphis and Tulane are weighing their options of joining the Pac-12 or remaining in the American. Depending on who AAC commissioner Tim Pernetti can acquire, staying in their current conference might be the best option for the Tigers and/or the Green Wave. Pernetti is known to desire UNLV and Air Forcefrom what's left of the Mountain West. If the Falcons and Rebels jump to the AAC instead of the Pac-12 then all the sudden the AAC might look more desirable for Memphis and Tulane to stay put. Both Memphis and Tulane are desired by the Pac-12 for their consistency and recent success in football. Both are essentially top 50 TV markets, but Memphis brings a record of success in basketball and Tulane is attractive because it's in New Orleans.
