NORTH TEXAS NOTESGuard dismissed from UNT men's teamBy JEFF WILSONStar-Telegram Staff WriterDENTON - Sophomore guard Michael Sturns has been dismissed from the North Texas men's basketball team for "not conforming to team standards," coach Johnny Jones said Tuesday.

Sturns, who graduated from North Crowley High School, was not in uniform for Saturday's 75-74 loss at New Orleans.

Sturns played in 19 of 21 games off the bench this season and averaged 9.7 points, third on the team. He scored a career-high 20 points Dec. 28 against UT-Permian Basin.

Junior Rich Young could serve as Sturns' replacement in the Mean Green's rotation. At 6-foot-5, Young is an inch taller than Sturns but not as athletic. Young, a transfer from Eastern Oklahoma State, has played in 15 games.

Consistency wanted

The North Texas women are headed down the stretch in the Sun Belt West Division race, in first place by a half-game over South Alabama with five games remaining.

The Mean Green (16-6, 6-4) plays its final home game of the season at 7 tonight against Middle Tennessee, and UNT does so not knowing what to expect from its most important player.

Senior guard Erika Bobo has been plagued by inconsistency, coach Tina Slinker said, and now is the time for her to return to all-conference form.

"Honestly, I'm very concerned about her play," Slinker said. "I think maybe she's trying too hard. She had a lot of goals for herself and the team, and I think she just needs to refocus herself and play."

Bobo has reached double figures in only two of the past six games and needed two late free throws to avoid being shut out Saturday against New Orleans.

Surgery for Dickey

Football coach Darrell Dickey said he had his gallbladder removed Saturday and was released Sunday from Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.

Dickey, 46, had spent parts of three days in the same hospital Jan. 29-31 after falling ill during the final day of recruiting. He returned to work Feb. 1 to announce the Mean Green's signing class but said he was due for more tests.

He said his condition has improved drastically.

"Shoot, yes," Dickey said. "I'm still sore from the procedure, but as far as the pain I was having, it's gone."

Dickey expects to return to work for a few hours today or Thursday and full time next week. UNT begins spring practice Monday.

Briefly

Women's forward Amber Jackson has minor ligament damage in her left knee but is expected to play tonight. The freshman, who tore the ACL in the same knee last season, did not play Saturday after injuring it Thursday.

Former football assistant coach Van Malone has been hired by Arizona State. He'll coach running backs for the Sun Devils after coaching defensive backs last season for UNT.

Track coach Rick Watkins said most of the team will rest this weekend while a handful of athletes travel to Ames, Iowa, for a meet at Iowa State. UNT was originally scheduled to run in the Houston Indoor.

YOU GUYS REALLY NEED TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK IF YOU'RE TRUE FANS.  I HEARD THAT SOMETHING REALLY NASTY HAPPENED ON THIS STEARNS THING.  I MEAN "NCAA NASTY" AND "LEGAL NASTY"

Care to elaborate and reveal your source? Otherwise, that's a nasty allegation.

It seems like I saw or heard that he puched another player in the face in a restaurant...don't know if that is correct or not, or if he also had other problems..

Saw him play when he was a soph started at Oakride in Arlington, he could hit from anywhere on the floor, was very quick.

OK, lets take lemons and make lemonade. Michael is one of ours, and even though we may be upset with him, we need to do what's best for all involved. (unless he's done something really heinous, which I haven't heard about)

Put Michael Sturns in pads as a wide receiver on the football team. He has the size, speed, strength, and all the God given athletic ability to be an outstanding player.

Just look what happened for UT-Austin when they put what was a prototype collegiate basketball player at their quarterback position.

Does anyone remember the Cash twins that won a 5A state basketball championship at San Antonio Holmes. Many colleges recruited them as basketball players, but they instead played football at UT and had a lot of success (much of it genuine). They played WR and TE and were able to outrun and outjump most of their coverage. Both were drafted and played in the NFL.

Sturns could possibly be that same type player for North Texas. He would have this spring in the system and could also redshirt next year before playing in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

If you get dismissed suddenly, there is an issue that will not make you wanted on any of the other teams. What a shame. It is hard enough to compete just from a talent and physical aspect. Seems like the mental and discipline aspect is making it about impossible. Illustrates that there is a lot more to it than meets the eye.
